Original Xbox Doom 3 co-op System Link (LAN) Not Working

Howdy! The title of this thread pretty much says it all. I bought a second (original) Xbox a few days ago, with a LAN cable (a cat 5 crossover ethernet patch cord,) so a friend and myself could play through Doom 3 in co-op mode. Unfortunately, neither Xbox will read the other when connected together with the LAN cable. I've scoured the internet trying to find an answer to this problem of mine, other than hooking them up to a router, which I also tried, but to no avail. So, after finding this forum on whatever page of my google search, I'm hoping somebody around here has had the same problem I do and have corrected it before. If not, any thoughts or suggestions are greatly welcomed upon this enigmatic topic.

Man I was hoping they rebooted this... and i think its gonna look great on the Next Gen consoles... Its gonna be big, just you wait and see...
