Skyrim - Non-Factional Side Quests

The Dawnguard plug-in for Skyrim comes with multiple side quests in addition to the main questline. There are specific factional side quests for the Dawnguard and the Vampires, depending on which side you choose early on in the main questline. There are also several non-factional side quests that will be available to you, regardless of the side you align with.

Durnehviir
After you have defeated Durnehviir in the Boneyard, you will find him waiting for you outside, but this time he will be friendly. He will express his admiration at your fighting skills and point out that no one has ever defeated him at Soul Cairn. He will then teach you how to summon him back into Tamriel, with the promise of a reward each time you set him free.

Every time you summon Durnehviir, he will teach you another word of Soul Tear, a powerful shout that deals a large amount of damage. The shout also acts as a Soul Trap and Reanimate Corpse spell. Each word will cost you a Dragon Soul to learn, so you will spend three dragon souls in total. You will need to activate all three words of the Summon Durnehviir shout in order to call him. The shout to summon Durnehviir can only be used when in battle or while hostile enemies are around. Durnehviir will help you in battle.

Forgotten Vale Books Quest
Once you find an Ancient Falmer Tome, take it to Urag gro-Shub in The Arcanaeum at the College of Winterhold. He will purchase the book from you for 1000 gold. There are four books in total; Unknown Book Vol. 1, Unknown Book Vol. 2, Unknown Vol. 3, and Unknown Book Vol. 4, earning you a total of 4000 gold. Urag gro-Shub will also give you translated copies. The translated books are; The Betrayed, The Journal of Mirtil Angoth, Diary of Faire Agarwen and Touching the Sky.

Unknown Book Vol. 1 is found between the Wayshrine of Learning and the Wayshrine of Sight. From the direction of the Wayshrine of Sight, head southwest, past a few frostbite spiders, until you come to a skeleton clutching a chest amongst some ruins. The book is next to the chest.

Unknown Book Vol. 2 can easily be acquired using the Emerald Paragon, which is found on the body of a Frost Giant in the Falmer village. Get the Emerald Paragon and travel with it to the Paragon Portal located to the east of the Wayshrine of Resolution. Put the Emerald Paragon in the Paragon Socket to open a portal to The Forgotten Vale Overlook. The book is next to the chest near the edge of the waterfall.

Unknown Book Vol. 3 - Travel upriver until you reach the entrance of the Glacial Crevice but do not enter. Ignore the path leading up the side of the mountain head towards the bridge. After crossing, you will find the book to the left inside a Falmer tent.

Unknown Book Vol. 4 - Leave the Glacial Crevice and go to Falmer village to find a large tent with a mammoth skull above it. The book is on the small table inside the tent.

Impatience of a Saint
Talk to Jiub to send you on this quest to collect the ten missing pages of Saint Jiub's Opus. You can also gather the pages first before going to talk to Jiub. You will come across the pages scattered all over as you go about your missions in Soul Cairn. You can find Jiub in the Southeast of Cairn, in the Boneyard side. Once you have gathered all the ten missing pages, take them back to Jiub and he will reward you with the Locket of Saint Jiub and a complete copy of Saint Jiub's Opus.

Lost to the Ages
Read The Aetherium Wars, and then travel to Arkngthamz, southeast of Markarth. When you enter the ruin, a voice will try to warn you back. When you enter the main chamber, the ghost of Katria will appear and try to dissuade you from exploring further. When you insist on continuing, she will come along with you.

Continue in side until you come to a gate operated with a tonal resonator. There is a similar one immediately after that. While inside, Katria will point out her bow, Zephyr, for you to retrieve from a fallen log. When you get to the last room of the ruin, you will have to figure out the correct sequence for the tonal detonators in order to get past the doors. The resonator sequence is as follows: bottom left, bottom right, top left, top right, middle. This will open the doors and you will find the first Aetherium Shard. If you hit the wrong resonators, you'll get attacked by Dwemer Ballista and various Dwarven automatons like Spiders, Spheres, and a Centurion. Katria will read out the locations of the other shards from her journal for you to find.

After collecting all the four shards, travel to the Ruins of Bthalft, located south of Ivarstead. Once there, proceed to put all the four shards into the Dwemer mechanism. The shards will join together to form the Aetherium Crest. Reach for the crest and take it out. The ground will open to reveal the entrance to the Aetherium Forge.

There is a lever to the right for opening the door, and you will walk into a dark path. Be careful not to fall off the edges, and proceed until you cross the dirty bridge and arrive at a staircase leading to the top of a tree. Use the two resonators above the door to open it and enter into the forge.

Inside the forge, you will be prompted to shut off the steam, and then you will get attacked by swarms of spiders and spheres. Once you defeat all of them, the Forgemaster will come out of the lava to the left of the forge to fight you. Once you defeat him, your objective marker will lead you to the right to find your crafting items. You will find a chest will a quest marker over it, and inside will be all the material you need to cat your item, plus other forms of loot. You will be required to forge one of the following items: Aetherial Crown, Aetherial Shield, or Aetherial Staff. Once you are through, Katria will thank you and then disappear.

Soul Cairn Horse Quest
You can only start on this quest while inside Soul Cairn. To start, talk to the distraught Soul, or simply go find Arvak's Skull. Arvak is the name of the horse that once belonged to the distraught soul. From the front of the main castle, travel eastwards until you arrive at a shrine with mistmen gathered around the skull. Defeat all of them and take the skull. This will make the soul appear from nearby to thank you. He will then reward you with the Summon Arvak Spell. You can summon Arvak and use him as a regular horse whenever you are in need.

Surgery
While playing the Dawnguard add-on, you will soon hear rumors from a guard or innkeeper about a Face Sculptor that has come to Riften. Your quest journal will update with the objective to locate the face sculptor. Travel to Riften and you will learn about the exact location from a guard. Travel to the Ragged Flagon, located within Riften's sewer network, using the Ratway. You will find Galathil, the face sculptor, sitting alone on a bench.

It will cost you 1000 gold for her to change your appearance. Once you pay her, a window similar to the initial 'Character Creation' option will appear. You can change almost all aspects of your appearance, with the exception of the character's sex and race. You can repeat this quest as many times as you desire.
