Skyrim - Dawnguard Vampire Lord Quests

The Dawnguard add-on for Skyrim gives you the option to become a Vampire Lord, or a vampire killer as a member of the Dawnguard during the main quest. The Vampire Lord quests are what you will be required to complete if you choose to become a vampire early on in the main quest line.

Many of the quests are similar in terms of objectives and locations, regardless of which side you choose. However, there are some quests that you will only be given based on the side you choose. Here is a run down of the quests you will cover as a Vampire Lord:

Dawnguard
This is the first quest in the DLC's main quest line, and it is mandatory for either side that you choose. You will start hearing about the Dawnguard faction once you reach level 10. Travel to Riften and talk to the guards at the gate. They will give you some information and direct you to Fort Dawnguard. Take the road from Riften and travel until you pass a small bridge. Start looking along the cliffs for a cave that will lead you into Dayspring Canyon. On the way, you will meet Agmaer, a fellow who also wants to join the Dawnguard, and he will ask to accompany you.

Outside the fort, you will find Durak practicing with a crossbow, and after talking to him, he will give you a crossbow of your own and some steel bolts. Inside, you will find Isran, leader of the Dawnguard, and Tolan, a priest of the Vigilants, talking. Tolan will tell you about the vampire attacks. Isran will recruit you into the Dawnguard, and give you your first assignment: to investigate what the vampires were looking for in Dimhollow Crypt. Tolan offers to meet you there, as he wants to avenge the killing of his fellow Vigilants by the vampires. The quest ends here, and the next one, Awakening, begins immediately after.

Awakening
Your objective on this quest is to explore Dimhollow Crypt. When you enter the Crypt, you will find two vampires talking. Vigilant Tolan will be dead on the floor. The vampires will attack you, with the help of death hounds. Kill all of them then climb on to the second floor of the tower to the right. You will find a lever for opening the big gate so that you can go into the next chamber.

Proceed forward and you will come to a cavern with a vampire and some skeletons. Defeat them then go north down the steps to where a leveled draugr is fighting some vampires. You will come to a place with four gates; take the one on the extreme left to enter the next area. The tunnel will lead you to a cavern with a lake, and several skeletons and a vampire will emerge from the lake to attack you. Kill them and proceed to the room at the top of the ramp where you will encounter more vampires, death hounds and frostbite spiders before you come to a chamber with a large iron gate. Use the elver to your left to open the gate then kill the giant frostbite spider and the boss vampire that are fighting each other before you go deeper into the cavern.

Inside the cavern, you will find Lokil killing vigilant Aldavald. Kill Lokil and his thralls then go over the bridge on to the circular platform with a pedestal at the center. Press the button on the pedestal and push the braziers in place so as to light them. The floor will open up to reveal a mysterious woman by the name Serana carrying an Elder Scroll. Talk to her briefly to try find out what is going on. The quest will end here and the next one, Bloodline, begins soon after.

Here is a photo of Serana appearing for the first time:

Bloodline
This quest involves you taking Serana back to her father at Castle Volkihar. You can choose to walk, fast travel or hire a ferry man to take you there. When you arrive, you will meet Serana's father, Vampire Lord Harkon. As a reward, he will offer you a chance to become a Vampire Lord and join his bloodline. If you accept this offer, Harkon will bite you and you will faint. When you wake up, you will be in the Volkihar Cathedral, where Harkon will teach you how to use your new found powers. These include raising the dead, draining life, and using the claw attack. Once you have mastered your powers, you will be given the quest to fill The Bloodstone Chalice.

The Bloodstone Chalice
Speak to Garan Marethi; he will give you the Bloodstone Chalice and explain the quest. You are required to fill the chalice with the water of Redwater Spring, and add the blood of a powerful vampire to it. Redwater Spring is located to the Southeast of the map, and to get there, you have to pass through Redwater Den. Open the trapdoor to get into the den and you will find the doorman who will give you a few words of warning about the place. Approach the locked gate at the end of the corridor and pick the adept-lock to open it. Expect plenty of hostility from everyone around so be ready to fight them.

Go to the upper floor and use the lever to lower the bridge so that you can cross and go deeper into the cavern. Watch out for the marked tiles on the floor as they cause spikes to spring from the walls when stepped on. Continue through the iron door and kill the enemies that come your way. These include a vampire named Venarus Vulpin, whom you should kill and loot his body for the Redwater Spring key.

Approach the spring and you will be prompted to fill with the glowing red liquid. After that, two elite vampires will come out to attack you. Kill both of them and take the blood of one and add it to the chalice. Return to Castle Volkihar with the filled chalice and talk to Garan, then Harkon, and the quest will be complete.

Prophet
Your objective on this quest is to find the Moth Priest, Dexion Evicus, so that he can read the Elder Scroll brought by Serana. Serana will ask to accompany you on this mission. Cross Dragon bridge and travel south on the road until you come across a broken carriage. There will be corpses lying around, and one of them will have a note directing you to Forebears' Holdout, a nearby ruin. Fight the Dawnguard members surrounding the priest, then use your Vampire Seduction powers to convince him to come with you. Take him back to Castle Volkihar to meet Lord Harkon and read the Elder Scroll. The Moth Priest will reveal that two more Elder Scrolls are needed in order to read the whole prophesy.

Chasing Echoes
Selena will inform you that she knows where you can find one of the Elder Scrolls that are required by Dexion. She believes that her mother Valerica knows where one of the Elder Scrolls is, but you have to help find her. She tells you that her mother is hiding somewhere inside Castle Volkihar, but you have to dismiss any followers you have before she can lead you there. She will take you to a secret entrance into the castle through the old docks. You will have to fight some powerful skeletons that you will find guarding there. Once you get inside, you will soon be attacked by skeletons, death hounds and a feral vampire. Defeat them then take the stairs in the opposite corner of the room. You will find a lever for lowering the bridge so that you can access the courtyard.

You will encounter more enemies in the form of death hounds and a giant Frostbite spider. When you reach the courtyard, Serana will tell you to find the missing pieces of a moon dial that are needed to open a secret entrance. The pieces are lying around in the courtyard and should not be hard to find. More gargoyles will attack you just outside the laboratory.

Inside the lab, you will find Valerica's journal in the central bookcase to the right of the entrance. Serana will read out some ingredients that are found inside the lab. Gather them, and then Serana will add her blood to the mixture in order to open the Soul Cairn portal. To enter the Soul Cairn, you have to be a Vampire Lord.

Beyond Death
Inside the Soul Cairn, your quest marker will lead you to the Boneyard, where you will find Serana's mother, Valerica, standing near the entrance. There is an invisible barrier preventing you from reaching her, but you can still talk to her. She tells you that the barrier can only be removed if you kill the three Boneyard Keepers.

The Keepers each live in separate towers, and there are quest markers leading to all three. Each Keeper has around 1-4 minions with them. Kill all of them, then go back to Valerica. She will now be free to lead you into the boneyard. Inside, you will encounter the dragon, Dunheviir, whom you have to defeat in order to retrieve the Elder Scroll. Valerica will handle the skeletons so that you can concentrate on Dunheviir. Defeat him and take the Elder Scroll (Blood) then return to Valerica's study through the portal. From there, you and Serana can fast travel back to Castle Volkihar.

Seeking Disclosure
The objective of this quest involves bringing back the two Elder Scrolls (Blood and Dragon) to the Moth priest so that he can read all of them together to reveal the prophesy. You will have the Elder Scroll (Blood), having completed the Chasing Echoes and Beyond Death quests. You should also have the Elder Scroll (Dragon) in your inventory. If not, it was sold to Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold. You can buy it back for 4000 gold.

Once you take back the two Elder Scrolls to Dexion, he will no longer be able to read them as he has gone blind while trying to read the first scroll without adequate preparation. However, he will inform you that there is a way through which you can read the scrolls by yourself to reveal the ancient prophesy. This involves you traveling to the Ancient Glades to perform the Ritual of the Ancestor Moth. He will give you the third Elder Scroll (Sun) and the quest will end here.

Unseen Visions
Take all three Elder Scrolls to the Ancient Glades, east of Falkreath. It is best to approach it from the north due to the steep surroundings. Enter the cave and follow the tunnel until you get deeper into the inside cavern. You will see some stone pillars and a large, circular rock at the center. Pick the Draw Knife at the center of the circular rock and use it to collect the bark of some Canticle trees nearby.

There will be swarms of Ancestor moths flying around. Run into a swarm to attract them so that they follow you. Gather seven swarms this way, and then stand in the column of light to start reading the Elder Scrolls, beginning with the Elder Scroll (Blood). You will be engulfed by blidning light as you proceed into the other scrolls and you will see a vision of a map showing you the location of Auriel's Bow on the western edge of Skyrim. Once you finish reading the scrolls, talk to Serana and tell her about the location you saw in your vision. After that, the quest ends and the next one begins.

Touching the Sky
Travel to Darkfall Cave, located directly south of Castle Volkihar, in the Northwest of Skyrim. Enter the cave and walk along the dark path. Kill any frostbite spiders and trolls that you come across. You will soon come to a bridge, and while on it, it will collapse and plunge you into the underground river below.

When you get washed off the river, you will find yourself in a spider cave. Kill all the spiders there and take the dark tunnel you find there. It will bring you to an abandoned camp at a junction point. Either of the two routes will bring you to Knight-Paladin Gelebor praying at an altar.

Gelebor will offer to help you locate Auriel's Bow, in exchange for you killing his brother, Arch-Curate Vrythur, who he claims has been corrupted by the Falmer. He tells you that Auriel's Bow, and his brother, are in the Inner Sanctum. To get there, you must pass through the five Wayshrines along the way. He gives you the Initiate's Ewer and raises the domed opening into the wayshrines for you to enter.

Follow the corridor and fight off the Falmer and chaurus hunters that attack you. Pass through the Falmer camp and into a water fall ahead. The routes to the wayshrines are marked by waypoints so they will be easy to find. Enter into the portal to take you to the Forgotten Vale so that you fill the Initiate's Ewer from all the wayshrines. After the last wayshrine, go towards Northeast to the Inner Sanctum.

When you arrive at the Inner Sanctum, you will find the Statue of Auriel standing tall in the courtyard. Climb up the stairs and pour the water from the Ewer into the basin. The water will flow towards the main entrance and unlock the seal so that you can get inside. There will be several frozen Falmer statues around, with some next to the Shrine of Auriel.

Put the Ewer on the pedestal so as to open the gates leading to Vrythur's Chamber. Once you defeat him, Gelebor will come in and thank you. He will then give you Auriel's Bow and some Sunhallowed arrows.

Kindred Judgment
This is the final quest, and involves you and Serana going back to Castle Volkihar to confront Lord Harkon. When you get there, none of the vampires will be able to have dialogue with you, instead directing you towards Lord Harkon. You will find him waiting for you in the Cathedral in his Vampire Lord form. Towards the end of the ensuing dialogue, he will demand that you give him Auriel's Bow. Whether you give it to him or not, he will attack you, and the final battle will begin.

When his health is draining during the fight, Lord Harkon will retreat to the Blood Fountain behind an invisible barrier to heal. In the menatime, he will summon gargoyles to attack you. Finish them off then use Auriel's Auriel's bow and the Sunhallowed arrows to break the invisible barrier so that you can finish off Harkon. Once the battle is over, Garan Marethi will come in and thank you for defeating Lord Harkon. The quest will end soon after.
