Skyrim - Dawnguard Side Quests Guide

Apart from the main questline, there are several side quests that also form part of the Skyrim - Dawnguard plug-in. You can start on side quests by interacting with particular NPCs at specific times, or by interacting with special items, for example, reading a book. There are several quests with a radiant component, while some are repeatable. Here are the side quests you will take on if you choose to join the Dawnguard in the main questline.

Ancient Technology
Before you begin on this side quest, you must have completed the quest "A New Order". To start on this side quest, speak to Sorine Jurard. She will inform you about the Dwemer Schematic that contains designs for a Dwarven crossbow. She instructs you to retrieve it from a radiant location, usually a Dwarven ruin or a bandit stronghold.

You will find the schematic inside the boss level chest in the radiant location. It is sometimes guarded by a boss level enemy, like a bandit chief. Inside the chest, you will find a Dwarven Haul note and several pieces of Dwemer metal. Once you have the schematic in your inventory, deliver it to Sorine Jurad and she will reward you with a leveled piece of enchanted armor or weapon. You can complete this quest six times, and each time Sorine will reward you with a different enchanted item. She will also teach you how to craft the item in question, as long as you have unlocked the corresponding smithing perk.

Bolstering the Ranks
After returning to Fort Dawnguard with Dexion Evicus, go and talk to Sorine Jurard. She will tell you that the Dawnguard could do with some more help, and instruct you to ask Isran to recruit Florentius Baenius. Isran will be reluctant at first, but will eventually give in and tell you that Florentius is in Ruunvald excavation site, located in the mountains east of Shor's Stone and north of Riften.

When you arrive at Ruunvald, kill all the subjugated vigilants and huskies who come to attack you. As you get further into the mine, watch out for the traps; a trip wire, and three pressure pressure plates that activate three different crossbow mounts. This being a mine, you will find some pieces of malachite ore and some chests with leveled loot.

Enter Ruunvald Temple and you will encounter more subjugated vigilants and Minorne, the warlock who subjugated them. Defeat all of them and loot Minorne's key to open the prison where Florentius Banius is kept. Open the gate and speak to Florentius- he will agree to join the Dawnguard and the quest will end there.

Cleansing Light
Speak to Gunmar and he will send you on this quest to kill a leveled Master Vampire at a radiant location. Though the location will always be a vampire lair, the boss may be another type of NPC or creature.

Here is a list of the possible locations Gunmar will send you to on this quest:

Bloodlet Throne

Broken Fang Cave

Cragwallow Slope

Fellglow Keep

Haemar's Shame

Mara's Eye Pond

Moldering Ruins

Movarth's Lair

Pinemoon Cave

Shriekwind Bastion

Once you have killed the vampire boss, report back to Gunmar and he will reward you with a leveled apparel item.

Hide and Seek
For this quest, Gunmar will send you to a radiant location to kill a vampire masquerading as a traveling pilgrim, traveling merchant, traveling bard or visiting advisor. Since the vampire is thought to be a citizen, you have to kill him discreetly without the guards or citizens seeing. There are several ways through which you can do this:

First, you can use your Speech Skill, if it high enough, to get the target to follow you. You can persuade or intimidate the vampire and lure him to a secluded location where you can make the kill without being seen.

The second method involves killing the vampire from a hidden location. You will achieve this best using a high Sneak.

The third option is for you to transform and use a hidden identity. Find a hidden location and transform into a vampire lord or werewolf. You can then kill the target and flee before taking too much damage from the citizens and guards who will attack you as a result of the false identity and the killing.

Lastly, if your Illusion is high enough, you can use the Fury spell to cause the vampire to become hostile to everyone around. This will cause the guards to attack and kill the vampire.

Hunting the Monster
Speak to Gunmar and he will send you on this quest to kill a Master Vampire in a radiant location. He will send you to a major city to learn about the location of the master vampire from a friend of the dawnguard. Find the citizen that the objective marker points to, and use the persuade, bribe, or intimidate option in dialogue to obtain the Letter from the vampire that reveals his location.

Travel to that location and kill the vampire then return to Gunmar for your reward. This quest can be repeated infinitely. After killing the target vampire, you can take this quest again and be sent to kill another vampire.

A Jarl's Justice
Speak to Isran and he will send you on this quest to expose and kill a vampire masquerading as a Jarl's Visiting Advisor. However, you cannot do it openly without the Jarl's permission, as it will paint the Dawnguard in bad light. First, tell the Jarl about the vampire threat within his court, after which he will ask you to provide evidence. To do this, pickpocket the Visiting Advisor for their orders and show the note to the Jarl. You can find the Visiting Advisor in the main court of the Jarl's Hall.

Once you show the Jarl the note, he will allow you to kill the Visiting Advisor without the guards getting involved. It is also possible to kill the visiting advisor discreetly without seeking permission. Just make sure no one sees you, otherwise the guards will treat as a murder and attack you. Once the visiting advisor is dead, return to Isran and the quest will be complete.

Lost Relic
After completing the "Ancient Technology" side quest from Sorine Jurard, "A Jarl's Justice" from Isran, and several side quests given by Gunmar, go speak to Florentius Baenius and he will send you on this quest to retrieve lost artifacts that belonged to the original Dawnguard.

This side quest is divided into three parts, and each is listed as a new quest using the same name in your journal. Each variant of the quest involves you being sent to a random dungeon to retrieve the artifact from the boss chest. The three artifacts are; the Dawnguard Rune Axe, Dawnguard Rune Hammer, and the Dawnguard Rune Shield.

Dawnguard Rune Shield - The Dawnguard Rune Shield has a +10 Bash damage effect against vampires. When used for sustained blocking, it also creates a minor sun shield, causing +10 points of damage to the enemy. However, using it drains the wielder's stamina.

Here is a photo of the Dawnguard rune shield:

Dawnguard Rune Hammer - The Dawnguard Rune Hammer places a fire rune when the bash action is performed.

Dawnguard Rune Axe - The Dawnguard Rune Axe causes additional sun damage based on the number of undead killed. The weapon has a minimum undead count of zero and a maximum count of ten successive kills.

Once you return the artifacts to Florentius, he will let you keep them.

Preemptive Strike
Speak to Gunmar and he will send you on this quest to kill a Master Vampire at a radiant location. This vampire has to be killed before he can convert his allies into vampires. Once you accomplish this, head back to Gunmar and he will reward you with a leveled enchanted apparel item.

Here is a list of some possible radiant locations:

Gallows Rock

Falkreath Watchtower

Brittleshin Pass

Rift Watchtower

Boulderfall Cave

Silent Moons Camp

Greywater Gorge

Treva's Watch

Lost Knife Cave

Redoran's Retreat

Rescue
You will be given this quest by Florentius Baenius in Fort Dawnguard. You are required to rescue a friend or spouse from a Master Vampire at a randomly selected location. Friend, in this case, is anyone that has a friendly disposition towards you regardless of who they are. Even a Jarl counts as a friend. Once you have accomplished this, return to Florentius and he will congratulate you on your success. This quest is repeatable.
