Introduction

Hello and welcome to my Achievement Guide for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The fourth game in the famous series developed by Infinity Ward took a radical approach and fast forwarded from the Second World War to the current day and it paid off hugely. It is one of my favourite games for this console and it is without a doubt one of the games that influenced this console generation the most.

On the achievement side, the game lives up to its name with a series of very nice achievements that I really enjoyed unlocking. To obtain the game’s full 1000G you will need to unlock no more than 37 achievements and luckily for us, they are all obtained in the single-player campaign. You will unlock more than half of them just by playing through the campaign on the hardest difficulty setting (Veteran). If you have experience with the series, this is definitely the best way to start the game even if it can be a bit intimidating sometimes to eventually unlock Deep and Hard. There are some tips and advices in the guide related to the Veteran difficulty so make sure you give it a read before you start the game. After you are through with the Veteran campaign, you should start a new campaign on Recruit (where you are more or less indestructible) to collect the necessary intel items for Eyes and Ears and to sweep up the miscellaneous and mission specific achievements; you can find a list of both of those under the description of Win the War. If you did all that, you should be left with a single achievement to complete, which is Mile High Club. You can definitely do it before that, but I would personally leave it for last because it might take some time and nerves to unlock it and if it is the last one you can just focus on obtaining it.

10.jpg Look Sharp (20G)
Find 15 enemy intel items

There are a total of 30 intel items that you can find throughout the game and for this achievement you will need to find half of them. The intel items are laptops that you will find laying around during the missions. At the bottom of this post there is a full collectibles guide that will help you find all of them.

11.jpg Eyes and Ears (20G)
Find 30 enemy intel items

There are a total of 30 intel items that you can find throughout the game and for this achievement you will have to find them all. The intel items are laptops that you will find laying around during the missions. At the bottom of this post there is a full collectibles guide that will help you find all of them.

NOTE: Do not enable any cheats before you collect all the intel items and if you have any cheats enabled do not pick up any laptops!

12.jpg Down Boy Down (20G)
Survive a dog attack

To unlock this achievement you will need to survive a dog attack; that is when you will see the dog on top of you trying to bite you. It does not count if you kill it before he jumps on you. After he jumps on you, you will have to quickly press the B/Right Analog Stick (depending on your controller scheme) when it appears on screen. If you do it too fast or too late, you will die.

You can get this achievement in a number of missions but in All Ghillied Up it is very easy to obtain when you encounter your first group of enemies. If they see you, there will be 3 dogs in the area that will come running at you. Try to survive the attack and if you miss the timing, just reload the last checkpoint and give it another go.

13.jpg New Squadron Record (20G)
Complete the cargo ship mockup in less than 20 seconds

This achievement is specific to the tutorial mission (F.N.G.), specifically to the test course. You will have to complete it in less than 20 seconds, which could prove a bit challenging at the beginning, but it is not that hard at all. First of all, you get bonus for accuracy so if you got most of your shots on target, at the end of the course a few seconds will be subtracted from your final time. That is the time that matters and the one that has to be less than 20 seconds. Always switch to the pistol after the first 3 targets as you will have a much better accuracy score and try very hard not to miss and print in between targets to minimize the time. Remember that you can try this until you get it so take your time to learn the whole course by heart and to know exactly where the targets that you need to hit are. Once you know it perfectly, it is just a matter of time until you finish it in less than 20 seconds.

14.jpg Rescue Roycewicz (20G)
Save Pvt. Roycewicz on the stairs

This achievement is specific to The Bog mission, the famous night vision one. Close to the beginning of the game, you will enter a building and you will have to go upstairs with Roycewicz. As soon as he reaches the top of the stairs he will get shot by an enemy and you have to kill the enemy before he kills Roycewicz and the achievement is yours. If Roycewicz dies, just reload the last checkpoint and try again.

15.jpg Your Show Sucks (20G)
Destroy all the TVs showing Al-Asad's speech

During the Charlie Don’t Surf mission there will be a lot of TVs showing the speech given by Al-Asad. You will need to destroy every last TV that is broadcasting the speech to unlock this achievement. This includes the few tens of TVs that you will see in the news broadcasting station. The achievement should unlock as soon as you shoot the last one and if you finish the mission and you still do not have the achievement, it means you must have missed one.

16.jpg Man of the People (10G)
Save the farmer

This achievement can only be obtained during the Hunted mission. When you reach your first building and Cpt. Price says ‘Hold up! We’ve got company’ as soon as you enter the building go up the stairs on the left and up into the attic. From there you will have a good vantage point over three enemies that are harassing the farmer. You will have to wait for Cpt. Price’s command to kill them (otherwise the achievement will not unlock) and as soon as you kill the guy closest to the farmer the achievement should unlock.

17.jpg Straight Flush (20G)
Kill 5 enemies with one shot while in the AC-130 gunship

You will have control of the AC-130 gunship while playing the Death from Above mission. You will have three different projectiles: 25mm, 40mm and 105mm. The 105mm will be the one used to kill 5 enemies with one shot required for this achievement. Before you take a shot, make sure that there are 5 enemies in the group (the guns have different zoom levels so make good use of that). If you are sure just fire the gun, which should cover a pretty large area and kill the enemies instantly. If there were 5 enemies in the group, the achievement will unlock right away.

18.jpg Ghillies In The Mist (20G)
Complete 'All Ghillied Up' without alerting any enemies

This achievement can only be obtained in the All Ghillied Up mission and it is one of the best achievements that I ever obtained. It will require you to sneak through the whole mission without any enemies becoming alerted. If you are generally careful, it is not going to be very difficult, but you will have a few choices to make which will impact the mission. When you first have to opportunity to decide what to do, make sure you let the guy pass and do no kill him. A little further, you will take out an enemy that is patrolling the church tower. A little after that you will have another decision to make, which is not very important so you can kill him or not; it is up to you. The third one is probably the most important. You will be waiting behind a bulldozer and you will have to take out both of the enemies. After you did that, you will just have to be careful and finish the mission and the achievement should pop up at the end if the enemies were not alerted.

19.jpg Mile High Club (20G)
Sky dive to safety on Veteran difficulty

This is probably the hardest achievement from the whole game. You will have to finish the Epilogue mission (Mile High Club) on the Veteran difficulty. You are inside a hijacked airplane and you have exactly one minute to clear two decks full of enemies and save the hostage. Obtaining this achievement requires nerves of absolute steel. Most of the people that got it tried doing it over a hundred times before they achieved it and I am going to try and give you some advice on how to do it. The most important thing to keep in mind is that every second matters and it can make the difference between making it or not.
Here we go. 1 minute and counting! As soon as you can control the character run and knife the guy coming out of the bathroom on the left. As soon as you do that, you will see that there are two paths that you can take. Always go on the left. Right after you knife the first guy, you will notice a guy at the end of the left path. Shoot him as fast as possible (this will allow your teammates to be more efficient on the right side; keep in mind that they are very efficient and will mow down enemies in seconds, but they will never advance if you are staying still so you always have to be moving forward). Start going down the left path and try and lob a flashbang over the chairs that you can see in the next room as soon as you reach the frame of the first door. If timed right, the flashbang will stun most of the next group of enemies that will come towards you. There will be around 5 of them and after you and your team deal with them you will have another choice of left and right. You can go either way here, but I always preferred left. Sprint and duck behind the first set of chairs and reload your weapon. Some people recommend picking up weapons from the floor so you do not have to reload but I do not like this because they are always half full and it leads to more frustration later on. After you reloaded and half of the plane blew open, throw a flashbang aimed at the base of the stairs. You can then sprint and take cover behind the middle row of chairs. There will be around 7 or 8 enemies that come down the stairs. Your team will take care of a few of them, but you have to be careful as they could overwhelm you easily. You can lean out from behind the chairs for a very convenient shooting position. After you managed to deal with the guys on the stairs, run up the stairs (reload your weapon while doing this) and check your time. It should be very close to 30 seconds - halfway through; if you have significantly less than 30 seconds left, you can restart the mission as you won’t have time to reach the end of the plane. 30 seconds! You should go on the left side of the plane when you go up and throw a flash before you go up. As soon as you reach the top of the stairs crouch, advance and only concern yourself with enemies on your aisle. Shoot the wooden wall dividing the two doors at the end as there are usually two enemies behind it. Throw a flashbang before going into the next room and rush the half-blind enemies really fast. You will see three more flashbang on the side; make sure you pick them up and reload before you go forward. Throw one of the fresh flashbangs in the next corridor and make your way through it (you do not have to kill all of them in this one as with a bit of luck your fellow soldiers will take care of them. When the corridor becomes narrower, you will see a corner a few metres in front of you. Behind that corner there are always 3 enemies that can be very tricky. The last enemy is behind the second corner so be prepared to use your knife on him. After that, you are on your way to the home run. Sprint to the end of the hallway because you will probably only have a few seconds left. When you reach the end, and the door bursts open and the final guy comes with the hostage, time will slow down and a counter will appear. You will only be equipped with your pistol and you have to shoot the captor in THE HEAD (because Veterans only do headshots) or else you will fail the mission. Wait until the timer drop to around 1.0 seconds and then the enemy will poke his head out and that is your chance. As soon as he is dead and the VIP is safe, YOU HAVE DONE IT! Take a deep breath and do not forget to complete the mission (skydive from the plane) to actually get the achievement. After that, you are part of the Mile High Club. Congratulations!

20.jpg No Rest for the Weary (10G)
Stab an injured crawling enemy

This achievement can be obtained in almost any mission in the game and you will probably obtain it quite early in the game. You will sometimes see enemies that are crawling on the floor after they have been hit (you can help accelerate that by shooting him in his legs with a pistol). When he goes down, you will have to quickly run over to him and use a melee attack to stab him with your knife for an easy 10G.

21.jpg Deep and Hard (90G)
Complete the game on Hardened or Veteran difficulty

You will get this achievement if you complete the singleplayer campaign on either Hardened or Veteran difficulty. Considering that there are mission specific achievements for finishing them on Veteran, if you are going to try and unlock all the achievements, it is not worth it to play on Hardened and you should do it directly on Veteran. This is going to be quite a challenge even for the most skilled players. You will die. A LOT! You should get used to the idea. Sometimes it might get very frustrating, but finishing the campaign on the Veteran difficulty setting is one of the most intense and rewarding experiences that I have ever experienced in singleplayer. Below are a few basic advices I can give you, but in the end it is all up to you:

  • The most important thing you have to do to have a chance is always use cover. Without doing this, you won't stand a chance and you will die really quickly. Always keep an eye out for safe cover spots where you can hide if you get hit and if you are close do dying. When your screen is starting to get red, immediately hide behind the first object you see. Some of the hardest missions in the games are the ones where there is very little cover that you can use.
  • Use you grenades effectively. If you see a few enemies grouped together in a small space, that is always a good place to use a frag grenade. Flashbang grenades can be a godsend in certain situations, but use them carefully because you will not find a lot of them around.
  • Reloading is very important. When you reload, always do it behind cover. Also, make sure your weapon is always full before you get out of cover because storming an enemy position just to notice that your weapon ran out of ammo is not a fun moment.
  • Take it easy. There is no rush, so plan your moves carefully and always have a plan before going forward. Make sure you do not find yourself too far ahead of your fellow soldier as this will in most cases be a certain death.
  • Advance. It may sound contradictory to the previous tip, but Call of Duty 4 suffers from the same problems all the previous games in the series did: endless enemies until you cross an invisible line. So if you stay in the same spot for too long, you will most definitely be overwhelmed by enemies sooner or later.
  • Make good use of your teammates. They are not the pumped up killing machine that you are, but they will definitely come in handy more than once. Do not rely on them too much but do not forget that you are not fighting alone.
  • Keep calm. I know just how frustrating the game can get, but trying to stay calm and trying again will always work better than getting worked up over it.
  • Change your tactic. If you are really struggling on a certain mission, try a different route or try using a different weapon (or maybe more grenades) until you find a sweet spot and manage to pass that difficult spot.
  • Lastly, have a break. If you are struggling on one mission and you tried all the strategies that you can think of, put the controller down for the day and try again after a good rest. You will be amazed how well this works!
Persistence is the key in this game. You have to get up and try again even if you have seen the ‘War does not determine who is right, only who is left’ quote 20 times in the last 2 minutes. And always remember to stay in cover.

33.jpg Daredevil (10G)
Kill an enemy while blinded by a flashbang in the single player campaign

This achievement can very easily be obtained in the first proper mission of the game - Crew Expendable - and it is even easier if it is done on the Recruit difficulty. As soon as you land on the cargo ship, your fellow soldiers will take out the enemies in the cabin and you will see there is a flight of stairs that leads to a lower level. Make sure you run there before your teammates have a chance and you will notice an enemy that seems to be drunk at the end of that corridor. Aim at him and flashbang yourself by throwing a flash grenade and as soon as the screen goes all white start shooting and you are very likely to kill him and unlock the achievement in the process.

34.jpg Roadkill (10G)
Kill 2 enemies by blowing up a car in the single player campaign

This achievement can be very easily obtained in the Death from Above mission. There will be quite a few enemies standing next to cars that are not blown up yet, and that is your perfect opportunity. Fire any of the projectiles the AC-130 is equipped with as any of them will eventually blow up the car. As soon as the car explodes and kills two enemies in the process, the achievement will unlock.

35.jpg Bird on the Ground (20G)
Shoot down an enemy helicopter with an RPG in the single player campaign

You can obtain this achievement while playing the War Pig mission. Make sure the difficulty is set to Recruit to make things easier for you. From the bus, look right and you will see a container that has a few RPGs just lying on the other side of it. Pick them up and shoot at one of the helicopters hovering in the air. On this difficulty, it will probably take it down in one shot and the achievement should pop up right away.

36.jpg Four of a Kind (20G)
Kill 4 enemies in a row with headshots in the single player campaign

You can obtain this achievement while playing the War Pig mission. Make sure the difficulty is set to Recruit to make things easier for you. You can Call of Duty’s infinitely respawning enemies to your advantage in this case. You will reach an end of a road and turn right and you will see a few enemies ahead. Find a good camping spot and start aiming for their heads. As long as you do not move forward they will keep coming so you are bound to eventually kill 4 of them in a row with a headshot.

37.jpg Three of a Kind (10G)
Kill 3 enemies in a row with your knife in the single player campaign

This achievement can very easily be obtained in the first proper mission of the game - Crew Expendable - and it is even easier if it is done on the Recruit difficulty. As soon as you land on the cargo ship, your fellow soldiers will take out the enemies in the cabin and you will see there is a flight of stairs that leads to a lower level. Make sure you run there before your teammates have a chance and you will notice an enemy that seems to be drunk at the end of that corridor. Run towards him and stab him with your knife. Quickly after that, turn to your right and you will see two enemies sleeping in bunk beds. Proceed to stab them both to unlock the achievement.

Collectibles Guide

There are 30 intel items / laptops (collectibles) that can be found in the game and you will have to collect all of them to earn the two related achievements: Look Sharp (20G) and Eyes and Ears (20G). Fortunately, you do not have to complete a mission for the item to count. So if you already finished the game and you are only playing to collect the laptops, as soon as you collected all of them from a specific mission, you can return to the menu and start a new one. All 30 intel items can be found by following the video guide below (and if you only need to find only a few specific ones, you can see the exact time in the video where you will do so, below):

END OF THE GUIDE

If you are with me so far, that means you are well on your way to completing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I personally really enjoyed and had great fun obtaining these achievements and I hope you will do the same. It will definitely get frustrating during some points (especially Mile High Club) but with enough perseverance, the game is not incredibly difficult and you will surely obtain the achievements in the end.

As always, if you have any suggestions, feedback or constructive criticism, I am looking forward to hear from you and you can do this by posting in this thread or by sending me a private message. Also, if you have any problems with an achievement or you need help with a certain achievement, let me know and I will try to help you if I can.

Thank You & Enjoy Your Game!
Mika
