Borderlands 2. Character Builds: Zer0 the Assassin

Borderlands-2-Zer0.jpg

Classes in Borderlands 2 differ from those offered in the first title. However, many of them share pretty much the same possibilities and skills. You will still find Lilith, Brick, Mordecai and Roland in the Borderlands 2 but only as game characters and not as playable heroes. From the very beginning you will be offered to pick 1 out of 4 classes but the additional fifth character (and class) can be purchased and downloaded via Xbox Live. Those gamers who preordered the game, will get the downloadable content for free.
Classes in Borderlands 2:
1. Salvador the Gunzerker;
2. Zer0 the Assassin;
3. Maya the Siren;
4. Axton the Commando;
5. Gaige the Mechromancer (is the first DLC available for download via Xbox Live).

Zer0 the Assassin
Zer0 is one of the most interesting characters in Borderlands because no one has seen his face and even his name is a mystery. He works as assassin and to stay discrete he asks to call him by the nickname – Zer0 which, by the way, comes from the "0" hologram displayed over his faceplate when he dispatches a target. Zer0 is a challenging guy and an honorable assassin, so when you see him telling his targets to fight back – be aware of the fact that he does it for a challenge and not for boasting or things like that. Zer0 is a free assassin meaning that no matter the target, as long as he is paid well or there is a challenge, he will do what has to be done. Political assassinations and common hits – it makes no difference. His whole body, including face, is covered with a special and very good looking suit which adds another mysterious stripe in his identity. There are rumors that it is not a human hiding behind the mask of this mysterious warrior. Well, true or not, Zer0 does have unique and unpredicted powers that helped him to become one of the most famous assassin’s in the Borderlands 2 universe. Besides, he has only 4 fingers on both hands which is kind of unusual for a human being. After hearing of the Vault from a bartender, he traveled to Pandora, deeming the hunt as worthy of his skills.

Zer0’s unique and special action skill is called Decepti0n and it does an amazing thing: it grants Zer0 the ability to deploy a holographic decoy of himself. After that he automatically enters the invisible “Stealth Mode.” When in this mode, Zer0 can move unseen on the battlefield for a short period of time and deal amplified damage on his next attack. The longer Zer0 stays in Decepti0n, the more damage he can inflict to enemies. At the same time, the shorter Zer0 stays in Decepti0n, the sooner he is able to use the skill again. But unlike Lilith, when she Phasewalks in separate dimension, Zer0 is still vulnerable to pretty much everything. Yes, he is a hard to get in the stealth mode but even an accidental bullet can hit him and hit pretty hard. Decepti0n has a base cooldown of 15 seconds but it gives amazing damage bonuses: up to +650% Melee Damage, +200% Gun Damage and +250% Gun Critical Hit Damage.

Zer0 specializes on dealing high melee damage on single targets and is not that good against groups of enemies. But, this can be compensated by his ability to perform massive amounts of damage quickly, especially when he works in a stealth mode or uses his sniper rifle from the distance. When using his ability, Zer0 projects a hologram and, what is really important, enemies are drawn to the decoy in an attempt to kill it in any possible way. While his enemies are dealing with his hologram, Zer0 is capable of performing a powerful melee attack, shoot the bad guys with the gun or even throw a grenade. However, you need to remember that every attack performed by Zer0 will break the Decepti0n be it a single shot or a sword swing. Also, depending on the skills invested in Decepti0n’s duration, you will be able to stay unseen until the timer reaches Zer0. Of course, do not expect it to last for hours but a fair 5 second window is guaranteed for your creativity. The usage of your decoy is pretty much unlimited and you can distract enemies from you and kill them from behind, use it for distraction to save your teammates and if things get really bad – place it to run away and recover your health or wait for the backup.

Preferred Firearms
Due to the fact that Zer0 is not a regular character, his weapon tastes are rather unique. By all means, Zer0’s primary weapons of choice are good and reliable sniper rifles. Of course, it doesn’t mean that picking something else will work bad in his hands, because Zer0 treats every gun with great love and care but he has a certain weakness (in a good sense) for sniper rifles. They are very effective at the distance and are the second most powerful single shot guns in the game. No matter the rifle, if you aim for a headshot, you will always do massive damage for almost any kind of enemy unless he has some head protection bonuses or stuff like that. But no matter how hard you try, you can’t always be at the distance and take down enemies when they are not able to reach you. So, if you want to be effective in close combats without your sword, pretty much any kind of pistol will work for that matter. Pistols in Borderlands 2 have fast fire rate and do great damage. As a decent alternative for close and middle range combat you can also equip your character with an SMG.

If sniping enemies off is not your kind of game style, I would recommend to grab a shotgun and rush into the combat with it. With the help of Decepti0n you can become pretty effective and take down bad guys one by one like a deadly shadow. But the best way to become effective in melee attacks and close range battles is to equip Zer0 with a Gun with a Blade. Lots of blades grant a 50%, 100% or 200% bonus melee damage that sounds ridiculously useful no matter what you think. But being a melee warrior is not an easy task and you can’t possibly be oversecured. What I am trying to say is that Melee Assassins should use roid shields because they provide bonus melee when your shields are down. Also, taking into consideration Zer0’s constitution, the bigger the shield – the better the cover. And the last thing I would like to mention is Chemical Spewing. Zer0 is not good at fighting with groups of enemies but there is something that will raise his chances to survive on the battlefield. Chemical Spewing can deal with large groups of enemies while applying constant elemental damage.

When choosing weapon, you can pick whatever you like because pretty much every gun has something unique and sometimes shockingly impossible to offer. However, there are some weapons and brands that I would like to recommend. They might not be the best in general but they worked great for me, so there is a chance that they will work fine for you too. Vladof’s assault rifles and pistols have always been known for dealing nice damage and shooting faster than their competitors. Tediore’s SMG's and Pistols will also work fine being able to reload ridiculously fast. There is nothing more effective to perform a suppressing fire than guns produced by Tediore. Also, when the gun is no good for shooting anymore, you can throw it in your enemy’s direction and cause it to explode dealing high damage to the bad guy. Continuing the topic of SMGs and pistols, it would have been a crime to forget about Bandit’s production. Large magazines and good firepower is exactly what makes those guns a perfect match for assassins. The only downfall is that Bandit’s guns have high recoil and low accuracy while it should have been the other way round – low recoil and high accuracy. For some reasons I’ve found Hyperion’s shotguns great for keeping pressure on my opponents and getting the most out of the Assassin's DPS. Their pistols work great too.

Investing Skill Points: Recommendation

Zero Tree.jpg

One of the best things I enjoy about Zer0 is his deadly sword. Yes, of course, running with the guns and shooting enemies is an amazing activity but there are classes who have been created for this kind of job. Zer0 is a bit different kind of fellow and if you want to see what he actually sees and feel what he actually feels, I would recommend to seriously concentrate on the Cunning skill tree. It’s almost 100% focused on improving your Decepti0n ability and turns you into the deadliest close combat assassin ever known. So, when spending points in Cunning, concentrate on the left part and get Fast Hands, Fearless and The Rising Sh0t to the highest level. This will increase your reload speed on 25%, weapon swap speed on 50%, fire rate on 25%, gun damage on 15%, +10% to gun damage and +9% to melee damage each time you successfully complete ranged or melee attack. Death Mark will add additional 20% bonus to the marked enemy, so do not forget to put a point in there. On the right side of the skill tree the only thing worth spending points on is Unf0rseen. Its uniqueness lies in making your hologram to explode after you come visible. I’ve spent only two points there because the rest was spent on some different skills but if you want – you can always spread them differently. From that point maxing to the last one available skill is recommended.

However, Decepti0n won’t be good just for itself and just with one skill tree filled to the bottom. So, the next or, actually, the parallel step is to spend the rest of your points in Sniping. And again – start from the left side and max the Headsh0t skill. Then improve your accuracy with Precisi0n (also, maxing it to the highest possible level) and support it with Vel0city. While Headsh0t skill will grant you +20% to your critical hit damage, Precisi0n will improve your accuracy on 25% but Vel0city will literary make the best investment ever: Bullet Speed +100%, Critical hit damage +15% and gun damage +10%. The last point available went to B0re. It allows you to shoot through enemies, gaining +100% damage per enemy pierced. In Decepti0n enemy’s critical locations will be highlighted.

Bloodshed is highly focused on melee attacks and if this is what you actually need, try to combine it with the neighbor Cunning. Killing Bl0w is just amazing when dealing with injured enemies. It can deal up to 500% of extra melee damage. It works effectively with shotguns that deal high damage. Shoot first to take a greater part of the health and then finish your enemy with the sword. Ir0n Hand is not a bad choice either because it makes you tougher and still gives melee bonuses. Grim is OK as well as Be Like Water but the next line with the F0ll0wthr0ught has actually changed my fighting style. Just imagine – leveled to the possible maximum you get +40% to your movement speed, +30% to your Gun Damage and +40% to your Melee damage every time you kill an enemy. If you keep killing the bad guys nonstop (that, probably, is going to happen anyway) you can turn into a spinning killing machine. By all means, your next step should be Execute. It is a Melee Override Skill and while Decepti0n is active and a target is under your crosshairs, you can melee to dash forward a short distance and perform a special melee attack, dealing massive damage. It also has a range of 3 meters. The next three (when maxed to the possible level) offer great abilities too. Resurgence will help you to restore your health with your melee attacks (up to 20%), Like the Wind will increase your melee and gun attacks damage when you are on the go and Many Must Fall will allow Zer0 to deploy another holographic decoy.
The way you are going to spread your skill point is totally up to you but concentrating on skills your hero is the best at is the righteous thing to do.

Also, for more information on skills you can and should check out this link. There you will find a skill constructor that allows players to build their own skill tree and count the number of skill points required to become an effective warrior. Planning with this constructor will help you to see the future potential of your character and bonuses he will get after spending points on this or that skill.

Great character, really fun to do a melee build thanks to Many Must Fall. The Kunais and Death Mark are great too for Melee against bosses. To see the bullshit a melee Zer0 can pull of, look up the Gearbox forum moderator that goes by the nick of "Gothalion". He does great stuff with the Asssassin!

I went all out sniping build and it's been super fun to play around with. Only regret is that I can't do much damage with my melee attack, nor can I do extensive damage with guns other than snipers, but all I need is one critical hit with my sniper and it does crazy damage.
