If one of the four lights surrounding your Xbox 360 power button flashes red, you might receive following error code:

E74
E66
E68
E69
E70

Or you might not see any picture on the screen.

If you see the error code E74, your console needs to be repaired.

But if you see the other codes mentioned above or no picture on the screen, follow the steps bellow to troubleshoot the problem:

Step 1

Disconnect and reconnect your power supply cords

You may see one flashing red light after turning on your Xbox 360 console if the power supply cords are not plugged in properly. So, you need to reset your power supply.

Here is how:

  • First you need to turn off your console.
  • You’ve to disconnect the power cord from the back of your console. You also have to unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and the power supply unit.
  • Now you need to reconnect all three connections. You must ensure that the connections are secured.
  • Finally, turn your console back on.

If the problem exists, follow the next step:

Step 2

Remove your hard drive

Hard drive failure might be the reason of one flashing red light. To check if this is true, remove your hard drive temporarily.

See: How to remove and reattach Xbox 360 hard drive

Note: Not all Xbox 360 consoles include a hard drive.

After removing the hard drive, turn your console back on. If there is no flashing light, there is a problem with your hard drive. But if the light still flashes red reattach the hard drive and follow the next step.

Step 3

Remove memory units and USB flash drives

Faulty memory unit or USB flash drive might causes the error. If you’re using a memory unit or USB flash drive, you need to remove it.

To remove your memory units or USB flash drives, you need to turn off the console. After removing the memory units or USB flash drives, turn your console back on.

If this solution worked, you’ll not see the error message and the light no more flashes red.
But if the problem still exists, follow the next step.

Step 4

Disconnect accessories

One light might flashes red because of a defective accessory connected to your console. So you need to disconnect any accessory connected to your console to see if it is true.

Here is how:
  • First, you need to turn off your Xbox 360 console.
  • Now, disconnect any accessories, such as controller or the Wireless Networking Adapter.

Note: The A/V cables and the power supply must be plugged into your console.
  • Finally, turn your console back on.

After performing all above, if you cannot troubleshoot the problem, your console needs to be repaired.
