Skyrim - Dawnguard Main Quests
There are 12 Dawnguard Main Quests for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim add-on. You can start on the first main quest at Level 10 or higher. Begin by listening to rumors, or asking the Hold Guards about a group of Vampires that are recruiting members. You will be directed to Fort Dawnguard and the add-on will begin.
You can also start on the main quest line at Level 1 immediately after you escape from Helgen. Head straight to Fort Dawnguard through Dayspring Canyon and interact with the applicants and Dawnguard members.
Dawnguard
This quest is part of Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard, and serves as the introductory quest for the plug-in. Your aim is to join the Dawnguard. You will hear about this quest from a Hold Guard, or an Orc named Durak will approach you and give it to you after you reach Level 10. You can also start on this quest by going to Dayspring Canyon on your own volition. Fort Dawnguard can only be accessed through Dayspring Canyon, northwest of Stendarr's Beacon.
On your way, you will pass a glacial waterfall overlooking a lake. Here, you will meet a young Nord recruit Agmaer, who will ask to accompany you to the fort. When you arrive at the fort, you will find Durak practicing with his crossbow, and he will give you a standard crossbow and some steel bolts to try out.
Continue into the fort and you will come across Isran and Vigilant Tolan in a heated discussion. Here, you will learn that vampires attacked the Hall of the Vigilants and killed everyone, including Keeper Carcette. Tolan will give you a brief run down of the situation and Isran will send you to go investigate the Dimhollow Crypt. Once the conversation is over, the quest will be finished and you will move on to the next quest.
Awakening
This quest takes you Dimhollow Crypt to find out what the vampires were looking for there. Once you arrive, you will hear a conversation between two vampires about the attack, and Vigilant Tolan will be lying dead on the floor. The vampires are accompanied by animals called Death Hounds. Defeat all of them and proceed to the second floor of the tower to the right. Pull the chain there to open the large gate that leads into the next chamber.
Proceed through the tunnel until you reach a cavern with a vampire and some skeletons inside. To the left, there is a gate behind which you will find an Arcane Enchanter and some soul gems. Take the steps down and you will come across a leveled Draugr battling with some vampires. Beyond that, you will find four gates; take the one on the far left to enter the next area.
Follow the tunnel and you will come to a large cavern with a lake. Several skeletons and a vampire will emerge from the lake to attack you. Go to the room on top of the ramp where you will encounter more vampires and death hounds. You may also get attacked by a few frostbite spiders. Defeat all of them and proceed to the next chamber through the iron gate. There is a lever on the left for opening it.
Once past the gate, you will come across a wounded giant Frostbite Spider and a leveled Boss Vampire attacking each other. Kill them both and then go deeper into the cavern.
Once you enter Dimhollow Cavern, you will see Vampire Lokil killing Vigilant Aldavald. Kill Lokil and his thralls then proceed over the bridge into the large circular platform with a pedestal at the center. Push the button on the pedestal and the floor will open up to reveal a mysterious woman called Serana carrying an Elder Scroll. She will ask you to take her to her father's Castle Volkihar on the North coast of Skyrim. Her father is a powerful vampire called Lord Harkon. Fight off the gargoyles and other enemies on your way out. Once you take her home and meet her father, the quest will end and you can move on to the next one.
Bloodline
For taking Serana home, Lord Harkon will reward you with a chance to join his bloodline. At this point, you will have to make a choice that will determine your progress in the game. You can choose to become a Vampire Lord in the Volkihar Clan, or stick with Dawnguard and be released from the castle peacefully for your service.
Becoming Vampire Lord:
If you choose to become a Vampire Lord, Lord Harkon will bite you, and you will pass out. When you finally wake up, you will be in the Volkihar Cathedral with Lord Harkon. He will teach you how you use your Vampire Lord powers. These include; the claw attack, raising the dead, and draining life. If you were already a vampire, he will insists that his is the true form of vampirism. In case you are a Werewolf then, he will offer to cleanse you of it's filth. After you have mastered how to use your powers, you will be given a quest to fill The Blood Chalice.
Remaining with Dawnguard:
If you refuse Lord Harkon's offer and choose to remain with the Dawnguard, he will cast a spell and you will be teleported outside the Castle gates. You will be banished from the castle forever, and your only option will be to go back to Fort Dawnguard and reveal this discovery to the Dawnguard. On arrival there, you will find the fort being attacked by a group of vampires. Once you have defeated the vampire attackers, tell Isran about your discovery. The news will make him send you out to find some of his remaining allies so as to establish A New Order. If you follow the Dawnguard questline, Fort Dawnguard will be rebuilt and refurnished, and you will acquire Dwarven Crossbows and Armored Trolls.
Scroll Scouting
After completing the "Prophet" quest, Dexion Evicus will ask you to obtain all the three Elder Scrolls so that he can read the full prophesy. In case you had already acquired an Elder Scroll (Dragon) during the Main Quest, it should be there in the Inventory. If it was sold to Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold, you must buy it back. He'll sell it back for 4,000 Gold, but he can be persuaded to sell it for half if you happen to be the Arch-Mage. However, if you are not the Arch-Mage, the lowest Urag can accept for it is 3,000 Gold.
Chasing Echoes
Serana will inform you that she has an idea where one of the missing scrolls mentioned by Dexius can be found. She believes her mother, Valerica, knows where the scroll is, and you will have to enter Castle Volkihar where she is hiding. This time round, you can't enter the castle normally like the first time, so Serana will sneak you in through a secret entrance. If you have a follower, you have to dismiss them before Serana can show you the secret entrance.
Just outside the secret entrance, you will encounter some powerful skeletons. Once inside, you will be faced with skeletons, death hounds and a feral vampire. After defeating them, go upstairs and you will find a lever for lowering the bridge so that you and Serana can go across. You will encounter a giant Frostbite spider, which you must kill before you can reach another lever that lowers a bridge leading into the courtyard.
Once in the courtyard, Serana will tell you about the three missing pieces of a moon dial, which you must find around the courtyard in order to open a secret entrance. After that, you will have to fight more gargoyles and skeletons until you enter a laboratory. Inside the laboratory you will need to search for Valerica's journal, which is located on the central bookcase to the right of the entrance.
Beyond Death
After arriving at the Soul Cairn, follow your quest marker towards the Boneyard where you will find Valerica near the entrance. You can speak to her, but there is an invisible barrier preventing you from reaching her. She will tell you that the barrier can only be removed if you defeat the three Boneyard Keepers. The three keepers live in separate towers, and each has around 1-4 minions (bonemen, mistmen or wrathmen).
Your quest marker will lead you to each of the three Boneyard keepers. Kill the minions first then kill the Keepers. They may prove to be quite a challenge, and you can use Unrelenting Force to blast them off their towers. Once you defeat all three, return to Valerica. The barrier will be gone and she will be free. She will inform you that in order to get the Elder Scroll, you must defeat Durnehviir, a dragon.
Valerica will lead you into the Boneyard where you fight Durnehviir. He will be helped by some Bonemen, while Valerica and Serana will also fight alongside you. Let the two women deal with the Bonemen while you concentrate on the dragon. Once you defeat Durnehviir, Valerica will show you where the Elder Scroll (Blood) is hidden. Exit the Boneyard with Serana and return to Valerica's study through the portal. The quest will end here. You can choose to fast travel out of the castle instead of walking out.

Seeking Disclosure
Your objective here is to deliver both the Elder Scroll (Dragon) and the Elder Scroll (Blood) to Dexion Evicus. After obtaining both Elder Scrolls, you must bring them to Dexion Evicus to read. However, you will discover that Dexion did not prepare himself well, and has gone blind from reading the third Elder Scroll so he cannot read the ones you have brought. He tells you of an alternative way to read the scrolls yourself. There are secluded locations scattered across Tamriel known as Ancestor Glades. One of them is found in the Pine Forest in southern Skyrim. You have to perform the Ritual of the Ancestor Moth within the glade to reveal more answers to the prophecy and the location of Auriel's Bow.
When you ask Dexion about which order the scrolls should be read, he mentions that in his vision he saw the Elder Scroll which foreshadows the defiance of the gods with the blood of mortals is the key to the prophecy. He then gives you the Elder Scroll (Sun) and the quest completes. You must now take all three Elder Scrolls to the Ancestor Glade to unearth an ancient method of reading them.
Unseen Visions
With Dexion blind, he will explain to you the Ritual of the Ancient Moth so that you perform it yourself at Ancestor Glade, Southeast of Falkreath. Proceed to Ancestor Glade, east of Angi's Camp and enter the cave. Go deeper, past the foliage and over the felled tree trunk until you come to a large cavern. Go and take the Draw Knife from center of the large rock and use it to collect some bark from one of the surrounding Canticle Trees. After that, attract 7 Ancestor Moth swarms by simply walking around the cave and running into each swarm.
After attracting the 7 swarms, stand in the column of light to read the Elder Scroll (Blood). There will be a blinding light and a vision will engulf you as you read the other scrolls also. A map will begin to form with each reading, showing a location somewhere between Markarth and Solitude. After reading the scrolls, the vision will disappear and Serana will ask you about the location of Auriel's Bow. You will tell her that it is in Darkfall Cave, on the western edge of Skyrim. This completes the quest and immediately starts the next, "Touching the Sky". On your way out, you will get ambushed by Vampires or Dawnguard soldiers, depending on the side you aligned yourself with.
Touching the Sky
Once you reach Darkfall Cave, enter it and follow the winding path past the waterfall. Kill the Frostbite Spider you find lurking in the shadows and then turn right at the junction. Continue down until you reach an old wooden bridge. On the far side of the bridge are two Moonstone Ore veins and a pickaxe on a table. The bridge will collapse with you on it, and you will fall into the water below.
The fast-moving underground river will carry you downstream until you are washed off the river. Here, you will be attacked by several Frostbite spiders. Kill all of them, including a giant Frostbite spider that will emerge from a dark tunnel with a chest inside. Next, follow the dark tunnel until you come to an abandoned camp with two routes to take.
The first route is a shortcut. Pull the chain behind the bed shelter in the camp to open a stonewall door nearby. Alternatively, you can take the long winding path to the east of the camp. This will take you downhill, past a boulder tripwire trap, and into a large cavern with two Trolls inside. Either route will lead to Knight-Paladin Gelebor praying at an altar.
Knight-Paladin Gelebor will introduce himself and welcome you to the Chantry of Auri-El. He is willing to help you obtain Auriel's Bow, but you have to do him a favor first by killing his brother, Arch-Curate Vrythur. He says his brother was corrupted by the Falmer. He tells you his brother Vyrthur is hiding in the Inner Sanctum of the Forgotten Vale, where Auriel's Bow is also located. To get there, he gives you the Initiate's Ewer, which you must fill with water from five wayshrines: the Wayshrines of Illumination, Learning, Radiance, Resolution, and Sight.
After passing through the five wayshrines, you will come to the Inner Sanctum. Walk across the ornate bridge and up the stairs into the courtyard of the Inner Sanctum where a statue of Auriel stands tall. Climb up the steps and pour the Ewer into the basin. The Ewer will flow towards the main door and unlock the seal. Inside, you will see several frozen Falmer-like statues around the main lobby. Some are gathered around a Shrine of Auriel and a few hold items that can be looted from them. They occasionally spring to life and attack as you loot the items.
Place the Initiate's Ewer on the pedestals to open gates so that you enter Vyrthur's chamber. During battle, he collapses the ceiling several times as he awakens several waves of Falmer and chaurus to attack you. When all frozen enemies are finished, he will collapse the rest of the roof on you and a cut scene will follow.
When you wake up, Serana will tell you to get up and go to the balcony. You will be able to move during this scene but cannot take any other action during the dialogue sequence until Serana's confrontation with Vyrthur is completed. Soon as she releases him, you will be free to act and this is the time to finish him off. Do not blast him off the balcony if you wish to loot his body for some ancient Falmer armor. Once Vyrthur is dead, a wayshrine will appear and Gelebor will come through. He will thank you, telling you that you deserve to carry Auriel's Bow. He will also bless some Sunhallowed arrows for you if you ask. Finish talking to him and retrieve Auriel's Bow from the inside the Wayshrine. The quest will end and you will begin the final quest; Kindred Judgement.
Here is a photo of Vyrthur:

Kindred Judgement
The quest begins once you obtain Auriel's Bow at the conclusion of Touching the Sky, after which you have to confront Harkon. The stages of the quest vary slightly depending on which side you chose to join earlier in the questline.
Vampire side:
After obtaining Auriel's Bow, head back to Volkihar Keep to confront Lord Harkon. You will find him upstairs in the Volkihar Cathedral, in his Vampire Lord form, as he waits for you are Serana to arrive. When you confront Lord Harkon, he will berate you for being disloyal to him. He will also insult Valerica, and chide Serana for becoming more like her mother. At this point, Lord Harkon will demand that you give him Auriel's Bow. If you refuse to hand it over to him, he will attack you. If you decide to give him the bow, he will still attack you. It is advisable not to give him Auriel's Bow, as it can come in handy during the battle.
Dawnguard side:
After obtaining Auriel's Bow, head back to Fort Dawnguard to talk to Isran, who will gather the rest of the Dawnguard. After a short speech, everyone will head out to Castle Volkihar, where the Dawnguard, including one armored troll, will attack. Outside the castle, there will be five vampires, a few gargoyles and one death hound on guard. Defeat them, then enter Castle Volkihar to fight the remaining vampires and death hounds. Once all the vampires have been killed, follow Isran to a gated off doorway, then climb up the steps and through the doors, where you will find Lord Harkon. The conversation here is different from the conversation on the Vampire side, mainly in the tone of the conversation and in Lord Harkon's dialogue with the player. Regardless what dialogue options you choose, Lord Harkon will eventually demand that you give him Auriel's Bow, and will attack you in the end, whether you give it to him or not.
Final Battle against Lord Harkon:
The battle against Lord Harkon is the same, whether you are a vampire or a Dawnguard. Once the dialogue is over, Lord Harkon will summon gargoyles and skeletons to attack you. Let Serana battle the gargoyles and skeletons while you concentrate on her father. Lord Harkon will randomly dart across the room while firing vampiric drainballs at you. He will also use the Bat's Night power to attack you from above the balcony. With his health drained, he will retreat to the Blood Fountain and form an impregnable shield around himself to prevent you from attacking him while he heals. Equip sunhallowed arrows on to Auriel's bow and use them to destroy this shield so that you can finish off Harkon. Don't waste the arrows since he will form the shield several times. Once you strike the final blow, he will die while crying out his daughter's name for betraying him.
Once the battle is over, Garan Marethi (vampire) or Isran (Dawnguard) will walk in and congratulate you for defeating Lord Harkon, thus completing the Dawnguard questline. Serana will tell you that she will stay at Castle Volkihar or Fort Dawnguard, but will be available to accompany you on your travels should you ask her.
