A Square Enix representative has confirmed to IGN that a new Hitman title is in development at IO interactive for PC and next-gen consoles, while Square Enix Montreal will focus on mobile titles.

Square Enix provided the following statement:

"Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise. We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year."

Initially thought to be cancelled, I'm glad that there will be another new Hitman game. I enjoyed Absolution when it came out and thought that it was a fresh take on the Hitman franchise. I'll definitely be looking out for this game now. IO interactive had previously worked on games like Absolution and Kane and Lynch 2, and in my opinion did a good job for both the franchises.

That's cool, glad to see there's another Hitman in the works. I figured Square would work more on the Eidos side of things this generation.

ahem...YES!!!, TAKE MEH MONEY!!!

Seriously though I'm really glad that they're continuing the series after absolution's mediocre sales. Love the franchise and will be sure to keep tabs on this.

Sounds pretty cool bought Absolution and absolutely loved the hell out of that one, so I hope this one is good too. Though I kind of like some of the older ones a bit more at least they did not mess up Absolution much.

I prefer the older Hitman games, but Absolution was a very enjoyable game. Square probably sees that Hitman can get it done--get some strong sales--if they give it one more go around.

I can't wait to see what they do with this one. I played Absolution for so long, that game was stunning. I hope they have a multiplayer kind of like AC, except more tweaked, more options and varied gameplay

I wonder if this new Hitman game will be a reboot or a complete sequel that's designed for the next-gen. It's like how Ubisoft is dividing development of the Assassin's Creed series, where a next-gen game and a current-gen is currently in development. i'm wondering what they got in store for the next-gen crowd. We'll see as we move along.

I loved Absolution! I hope they keep it along that line of progress and improve upon it.

Isn't "next gen" current gen and current gen "last gen" by now since all the consoles are out now?

Glad to know there’s going to be a next-gen Hitman, and I really liked the franchise solely because it forces you to reign in the urges to be sporadic, and to actually learn to use common modes of cognition to finish the level.

The story itself may be a mélange of classic tropes/themes/motifs of “killer with a conscience” and what have you, but the gameplay and the unique style is what salvages the integrity despite of deficits all games have in some level. But with that said, having better narratives have the trap of leading to strict linearity, which might defeat the purpose of the open-ended world trend that most developers will take advantage of thanks to the next-gen consoles’ capabilities.

It’s prevalent for Kojima’s strive to really get his MGS games portrayed to their true potential, and it will definitely be something to look forward to in the future. It just adds on to how getting people to go into in-depth virtual experiential realities is inevitable.

The most newsworthy part of this is they said "we'll share more with you later this year"
Hopefully we'll get some news soon :D

Wasn't a huge fan of the first one that was put out and I know quite a few other people weren't, hopefully they do an amazing job on this new one! I love the idea!

Absolution was good from the little I played of it. I didn't really follow the series heavily throughout its run. I'm sure I'd love Absolution if I was a fan of the series. Just couldn't get into Hitman really...or stealth games in general.

Yes.

Square Enix breaking out with the Hitman again. This is great, my dreams of Chuck Rock returning gets closer and closer.

Great, Well at least they are continuing the series after a long time. Absolution was one of my favorite games. I hope they can make it a lot better and the action scenes should be more fluid compared to the previous versions. I hope they can release a trailer soon.

I hope we do but we probably will. Haha. This is great news for us. Hitman as always is a good game.

Hitman is always fun. The storyline might have been "meh" at times in the series, but I always loved the gameplay and missions. I'd say this is good news!

I always felt the same about the storyline--that it wasn't all that interesting--but the gameplay. I dig some stealth.

I'm just not a huge fan of stealth games overall. It's weird since stealth is like the main thing I level up in Fallout and Elder Scrolls. I'm thinking because it's an element of the game and not the primary thing that it hangs its hat on.

I love the hitman series. I'm really glad that they finally have a sequel coming out. Well, I was not really into the story line but the game play did made me love the game. I love the fact that you have an option to just kill who you have to kill and hide from the rest or have another option to kill everyone.

That's what I liked about Hitman and the environment really encouraged hiding--corners, nooks, shadows, doorway, all of that good stuff.
