What if Sony and Microsoft didn't publish different systems? What if the two companies torn down the wall separating them and joined forces to make a console that played both PlayStation and Xbox titles? Friendship is magic after all.

While we listen to rumors and wait for Microsoft to announce it's new console, the dreamers over at TechRadar have sketched out the PlayBox – a console concept that would harness the strengths of both companies and be backwards compatible with all past PlayStation and Xbox games.

What do you think of such a project? Do you see any benefits of having more than one console maker?

Sony and Microsoft would dominate the game industry and kill any other consoles in its path if they did this. It would never happen and it would be bad for the industry honestly. Right now we have choices to choose from, which makes them rethink their strategies and price tags. If they came together and took over everything, they'd probably charge a huge price for it, huge price for the online service, and games would be expensive. Nintendo would die completely and it would just be another name like Sega and Atari.

It would be pretty amazing to be honest. I really doubt it would ever become a reality though, but if Microsoft and Sony did team up they would surely make a lot of profit, the console would be extremely popular in my opinion! (so long as they were able to combine the best of both consoles into one). A console where you could play both Xbox and PS games would be such a great feature.

Haha, that would be interesting. The chances that two rival companies that try to out-do eachother, it would be highly unlikely for them to team up and make a console like this. Also, I think if they actually worked together, and put a lot of thought into it, it would be the last console they make for a long time.

What would be really cool is if Nintendo dropped the hardware business and focused entirely on the software part, just like Sega.
Imagine, playing Super Mario on a PS3.. crazy.

Then, due to Nintendo failing right now, there would be a monopoly. Monopolies are illegal at least in the USA and well... no competition = no need to bother making good things (just look at the Japanese Playstation Plus, compared to the Western one. In Japan they don't give a fuck because the 360 is dead there, for example).

It would just suck for us...
