X-Com is definitely one of my favorite games of the year, but it was at times quite challenging, especially if you didn't want to save/load every step of the way. I swore on my first playthrough that I would never restart a mission, just accept the losses, and man, was that TOUGH! For me the mission where I lost the most soldiers was unquestionably Newfoundland. I was not very adept at handling Chrysalids when I first hit that mission, and man did they tear my squad up.

Just calling the airstrike was tough, but making my escape without losing soldiers proved to be impossible. I think I got out of there with only like 3 of my squad still breathing and 2 of them were gravely wounded.

What about you guys? Any memorably difficult missions come to mind?

Beyond a doubt it was the first mission where you face the Chrysalids. The game threw so many new mechanics at you that mission it was too much to absorb. Between new enemies, saving civilians, and zombies I suspect that first time players are meant to get their butts handed to them on this mission. It comes early in the game and out of no where. I respect you for not restarting a mission. I told myself I would play that way but I got too attached to my solider and have to admit to restarting more than a few missions before I finished the game. Props to you
