I found this just now on the web and its very interesting. What really surprises me is
that COD, which many seem to criticize is leaps and bounds outselling everything else.

The unusual aspect of reading sales numbers for this coming generation is that a large portion of gamers will be buying digital instead of physical.

Unfortunately, this means any pre-order or sales numbers can't really be used for comparison or much analysis other than to say, "XYZ game as at least XXX number of sales". But without those digital sale numbers, nobody can see the whole picture.

Pretty much this. Who knows how many copies are going to get sold digitally. Plus, VGChartz isn't the bastion of accuracy. They guess more than anything.

These numbers don't seem to add up but I suppose digital sales are a unaccounted variable.

I could not post the link as I do not have 25 posts yet so here is a cut and paste from one of the sites carrying it.

Call of Duty: Ghosts tops next-gen pre-order charts as the console wars heat up.

Video game sales tracking site VGChartz has assembled the latest pre-order numbers for the Sony PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from Microsoft in the United States.

In the US alone, the PS4 has gained 125,000 pre-order unites since August 24th, 2013 through October 19th, 2013. That puts the PS4 at a total of 725,000 units pre-ordered in the US alone.

Microsoft's Xbox One console has been catching up, adding 175,000 pre-order units in the same time period according to the site. That places the Xbox One at 525,000 pre-orders."

"Week one sales for both consoles in the US are expected to be pretty similar," the site reports in a blog post. "At the current pace the PlayStation 4 should sell just over one million units, while the Xbox One should sell just under one million units."

VGChartz also lists the top pre-ordered next-gen video games.

Unsurprisingly, Activision's Call of Duty: Ghostssits at the top of both the PS4 and Xbox One lists, with 298,180 units pre-ordered on PS4 and 329,032 on Xbox One.

Battlefield 4nips at its biggest competitor's heels on both systems, tallying 273,766 on PS4 and 153,221 on Xbox One.

Meanwhile, the Bronze Medal on PS4 goes to Killzone: Shadow Fall with 250,155 units pre-ordered. On Xbox One it goes to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, with 137,928. The same game on PS4 clocks in at #4, with 213,354 units.

Here's the top ten on both systems:

PlayStation 4 - Top 10 Pre-orders

1.Call of Duty: Ghosts- 298,180
2.Battlefield 4- 273,766
3.Killzone: Shadow Fall- 250,155
4.Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag- 213,354
5.Watch Dogs- 153,569
6.Destiny- 89,970
7.Madden NFL 25- 81,119
8.NBA 2K14- 59,592
9.inFAMOUS: Second Son- 57,562
10.Knack- 40,982

Xbox One - Top10Pre-orders

1.Call of Duty: Ghosts- 329,032
2.Battlefield 4- 153,221
3.Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag- 137,928
4.Watch Dogs- 95,314
5.Forza Motorsport 5- 90,573
6.Dead Rising 3- 86,648
7.Ryse: Son of Rome- 82,888
8.Destiny- 66,448
9.Madden NFL 25- 58,870
10.Titanfall- 50,347

While Activision and EA take the top spot here, Ubisoft puts in a strong showing between Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs, even though the latter has been delayed into 2014.

Xbox One exclusivity probably hasn't helped Titanfall, meanwhile, though the game is still quite a ways out and those numbers will certainly swell.

Interestingly, the top 3 Xbox One launch exclusives-Forza 5, Dead Rising 3, and Ryse: Son of Rome-only barely surpass the total pre-orders for Killzone: Shadow Fall and are beat by around 90,000 units when inFamous: Second Sonand Knack(both 2014 releases) come into the picture.

Still, if these numbers are all accurate it does show the Xbox One slowly catching up to the PS4, though Sony still has momentum on their side.

I mostly found the stats interesting as the real hardcore games are going to get the One at launch and also preorder to get the free extras like COD and BF extra maps and things like that.

Or atleast it was one of the main reasons I preordered vs. downloading later.

@RKKeller

The per game sales are much lower on the Xbox One, but looking at the overall console sales, it seems the ratios should be closer. This looks like a great supporting argument that a much higher percentage of Xbox One customers will be buying digital vs retail.

The other conclusion could be that PS4 customers are more inclined to buy multiple games/copies. But I think my initial conclusion is closer to being right.

EDIT: I thought I'd do the math to make my point more clear.

Xbox One has 525,000 consoles pre-ordered.
PS4 has 725,000 consoles pre-ordered.

This gives PS4 a 27.4% advantage of the Xbox One in sales right now.

Xbox One currently has 1,151,269 pre-orders for games.
PS4 currently has 1,518,249 pre-orders for games.

This gives PS4 24.2% advantage in game pre-orders.

Ok, after doing the math perhaps my point isn't as obvious. :) But, considering the large numbers we are working with, that 3% difference could go to digital sales.
