Borderlands 2. Character Builds: Gaige the Mechromancer

Borderlands 2 Mechromancer.jpg

Classes in Borderlands 2 differ from those offered in the first title. However, many of them share pretty much the same possibilities and skills. You will still find Lilith, Brick, Mordecai and Roland in the Borderlands 2 but only as game characters and not as playable heroes. From the very beginning you will be offered to pick 1 out of 4 classes but the additional fifth character (and class) can be purchased and downloaded via Xbox Live. Those gamers who preordered the game, will get the downloadable content for free.
Classes in Borderlands 2:
1. Salvador the Gunzerker;
2. Zer0 the Assassin;
3. Maya the Siren;
4. Axton the Commando;
5. Gaige the Mechromancer (is the first DLC available for download via Xbox Live).

Gaige the Mechromancer
Gaige is kind of unusual class in Borderlands 2 and she plays a role of Mechromancer. Her main skill grants her the ability to control the D374-TP aka Deathtrap. For those who wonder how a 15 year old girl obtained a metal monster like this, there is a short background story waiting for you to be read. Back in the days Gaige used to be a high school student on the planet Eden-5. She was (well, and still is) very smart and very intelligent kid. And, as you’ve probably guessed already, the mentioned above Deathtrap was totally her idea. A piece of equipment like this can’t just lie in the closet being seen by rats and mops, so Gaige has made a decision to take part in the science competition. And things have been going pretty well until her rival, Marcy Holloway, stole Gaige's DT designs and sold it to Eden-5's police force. On the top of that, on the day of the science fair, Marcy's father bribed the judges and Marcy herself won the competition with the help of a robot based on Deathtrap's blueprints. But, things have gone even more complicated because of Marcy shoving Gaige. Deathtrap identified her as a hostile and attacked her with his claws. Long story short – due to Gaige’s miscalibration Marcy now rests in pieces. Literary. For that accident Gaige was escorted to the principal's office and faced expulsion and arrest for accidentally murdering her competitor. Luckily, no one has countermanded a right for the last call. This totally legal request helped Gaige to evade arrest thanks to her father who created a distraction. Afterwards she got herself a ticket to Pandora and travelled there with high hopes to find someone who will appreciate her talents the way they should be.
Gaige the Mechromancer is the fifth character class in Borderlands 2 and the first one available for download. Being released on October, 9 2012, Gaige can be purchased for either $9.99 USD or 800 Microsoft points. However, if you are the one who’ve pre-ordered Borderlands 2, Gaige the Mechromancer will be available for free download at any time.

Investing Skill Points: Recommendation

Gaige might be young but she is definitely capable of defending herself, especially with the robotic friend standing behind. Her fighting skills are based on a mix of human nature, mechanical power and teenage creativity spiced with adrenalin rush. Usually her play style is focused on elemental damage, athletic activity on the battlefield that also includes dodging and “pet” support. Her special ability called Deathtrap is extremely effective against everything, but ranged or melee enemies will suffer the most. Of course, to make it be that way you are supposed to invest skill points in the right skill three. Death Trap can act as a tank, drawing enemy fire away from Gaige, a laser firing shock trooper, or a spinning machine of death, depending on the skill tree you put points into. The default cooldown time to summon Deathtrap is 60 seconds.

Gaige the Mechromancer has a plenty of skills that revolve around Electrical and Fire Damage. If that is what you are looking for, Little Big Trouble is your kind of brunch. If you need to be effective on the battlefield and reload speed is vital for you, then investing in Ordered Chaos is something you need to do immediately. By the way – Ordered Chaos tree has a very close relationship between Anarchy and Dischord. This is how it works:
- if you do not reload your gun before the clip gets empty, Anarchy will continue to stack. But, if you actually DO that and RELOAD the gun – Dischord will come into play. Dischord slowly takes away the stacks from your Anarchy and this is something you need to pay your attention to in case you’re working on building up Anarchy. If you still have a bad habit to reload your gun prematurely but you realize it before the reloading process is over, quickly change your gun. This will keep your stacks in a safe place.

Anarchy is the deadliest skill in Gaige’s repertoire and if you are interested in upgrading it to the highest possible level, it is a good idea to concentrate on investing in the 1st and the 3rd Skill Trees. Not that long after you are going to see “the terrible awesomeness” of the Anarchy in combat. Ordered Chaos skill tree is almost totally responsible for making Anarchy better in all the possible meanings. So, if you choose to go down this skill tree after all, you will have to get all of the first row of skills in it to proceed. Of course, for being that concentrated you are going to obtain a powerful tool that will multiply your damage. This scheme works the following way: whenever you kill someone or fully empty your clip with no reload you get 1 stack of Anarchy. With each stack of it you get 1.75 % increase in attack damage but a staggering 1.75% decrease in accuracy. It might be a problem for those players who think that Gaige is a long range fighter and put a sniper rifle in her hands. Of course, investing in something else will, probably, make her a better distance fighter but I would still recommend you to concentrate on making it a close range character. Paired with a shotgun that has one shot in the clip, rather sooner than later your Anarchy state will turn into a real disaster at the close distance with no one even slightly capable of getting away. But you know what? There is a way to make things even deadlier! Actually, two ways: investing in “The Nth Degree” skill at 5/5 makes every 5th bullet bounce and hit the nearby standing enemy; upgrading Close Enough skill to 5/5 gives your bullets a 50% chance to hit walls or other objects and ricochet toward a nearby enemy for 50% damage. With the already obtained 500% damage it will make things even deadlier.

While Anarchy should be your number one priority, investing in other trees and searching for different strategy moves is also a good idea. Best Friends Forever is a skill tree that focuses on both Gaige’s and Death Trap’s survivability. If you plan to turn your hero into a close combat character, shopping in this neighborhood is exactly what you need. For example, “Made of Sterner Stuff” and “Potent as a Pony” improves of Gaige’ and Death Trap’s damage resistance. At the same time “Cooking up Trouble” and “Fancy Mathematics” directly affect Gaige's health and shield regeneration. Being a close combat character, using Deathtrap as a giant floating smasher is something that will make you unstoppable on the battlefield and for that matter you should be interested in spending enough here. For example, the “Upshot Robot” skill will increase Deathtrap's time summoned by 5 seconds every time you or Deathtrap kill something. On the top of that you are going to get a stackable +4% melee damage bonus. So, in other and simpler words, as long as there is someone or something to kill and you keep killing it nonstop, Deathtrap will be standing beside you and will grow in strength. Do not forget to add “Sharing is Caring” to your deadly cocktail of skills. When activated, it shares a copy of your shield and makes Deathtrap even a harder nut to crack. In every potentially complicated combat or whenever you think is good, summoning Deathtrap is always a good idea. With the combination of skills mentioned above you can turn it into tank. Use him to take all the heavy damage for you (bullets, missiles, grenades and all the rest). Of course, do not act like you have nothing to do and join the fight yourself. Deathtrap is great at tanking through enemies but Deathtrap and Gaige make a perfect killing duet, so – go get them! “Unstoppable Force” increases your movement speed and shield regeneration meaning that you get better mobility and it’s easier for you to get closer, take down an enemy with a shotgun and dodge back. Do not forget to pair this strategy with the already mentioned skills like “Close Enough” to increase the possibility of your deadly shots to ricochet.

Little Big Trouble skill tree is different and, at the same time, pretty much similar to the “Best Friends Forever.” It focuses on increasing damage output of Gaige in relation to her electrocute damage and elemental damage as a whole. Though, it still affects Deathtrap in all the possible ways. Investing in Little Big Trouble works well for those players who plan to become great in dealing massive amounts of elemental damage as well as blow through the shields of Constructors and Bandits alike. “More Pep” and “Evil Enchantress” will do exactly what was stated in the previous statement: they will buff your chance to cause elemental damage. At the same time, if you want to produce electrocute damage while performing an action, you need to spend some points on skills like “Electrical Burn” and “Shock and AAAGGGGHH!” Of course, to make things even more effective you are supposed to pick a proper shock weapon with a proper accuracy. Picking a combat rifle will make things work just as they are expected to. E-Tech Shock assault rifles are especially good with this skill tree too thanks to their high fire rate, decent damage and accuracy. Combining them with “Shock Storm” or “Electrical Burn” will make the difference. A sniper or pistol would also work well in this tandem but their fire rate is not that high, so try to use them in some other situations. Though, you should call for Deathtrap and make him distract the bad guys while you shoot off the targets. This will help to keep things working giving you a window for sending deadly shots keeping the bad guys busy at the same time.

The last but definitely not the least Ordered Chaos skill tree is closely connected with Gaige’s deadliest skill aka “Anarchy.” It is very different from the first two skill trees and totally changes the mechanics of the game. Almost every skill of this tree focuses exclusively on Gaige and her physical and power growth. The only two skills that directly affect Deathtrap are “Robot Rampage” and “Annoyed Android.” But one of the main differences is that investing in this skill tree changes your fighting strategy and the relationship between Anarchy and Dischord. You can build Anarchy by either killing an enemy or allowing your weapon to autoreload. If you do it right, Gaige will gain Gaige +1.75% damage boost but will lose the very same percentage in accuracy. In other words – you need to forget about any kind of weapon that is good at longer distances and concentrate on something effective at the close range. A one shot shotgun will be a perfect fit. Though, if you are not ready to become a close combat fighter – don’t even think about coming here. The whole point of investing points in the Ordered Chaos skill tree is turning your character in a close combat fighter. For that matter you should concentrate on skills that increase character’s damage to make it really effective. For instance, “Pre Shrunk Cyber Punk.” With the help of this skill you can build up to 400 Anarchy stacks compared to the starting 150. In other words, it means 700% damage bonus but minus 700% accuracy. With this kind of damage level nothing will survive after a few or even one shot. Upgrading this tree is all about following a popular Run and Gun strategy, so do not forget to add a big shield to the already obtained shotgun. Perfection has no limits and with the help of other skills you can make the others be even better. “Death from Above” will add a digi-explosion whenever you shoot an enemy while in mid air, “With Claws” allows you to digistruct claws and swipe twice at an enemy, dealing damage based on the number of Anarchy stacks you currently have and “The Nth Degree” will cause every certain bullet to ricochet to another enemy. The only downside of this tree is that it lacks the number of skills focused on Deathtrap and it is a shame to have such a great robot but do not have an opportunity to use its full potential. While using him as distraction is a good idea, using him as a deadly weapon is a lot more effective. So, if you support my concern, you should do the next: even maxing out the Ordered Chaos tree will leave you 11 points that you should spend in the Best Friends Forever tree. This will help you to keep both Deathtrap and Anarchy stacks on the right level and increase their synergy. Use “Close Enough” to compensate the accuracy loss from Anarchy a bit, “Cooking Up Trouble” to regenerate the health you lose using “Blood Soaked Shields” and “Upshot Robot” to keep Deathtrap out longer and increase his melee damage.

Ordered Chaos
If accuracy is not an issue and you want to be effective and deadly at the close range distances, you should start investing in this Skill Tree. Spending points in “Ordered Chaos” will focus on Gaige’s passive skill called “Anarchy” that boosts damage level but at the same time sacrifices accuracy. By the way - Anarchy is one of the two first skills for Gaige in the Ordered Chaos skill tree. With it, Gaige improves her damage but lowers her accuracy each time she kills an opponent or completely empties and reloads a magazine with her weapon.

Smaller, Lighter, Faster
Tier – 1
Levels – 4
Effect: Increases you reload speed by 6% per level but decreases your magazine size by 1% per level.
Anarchy

For every stack of Anarchy you have, you gain bonus gun damage, but your accuracy is decreased. Prematurely reloading your guns removes all stacks of Anarchy. Anarchy stacks are quickly lost while in "Fight for Your Life." It should be noted that at least one bullet from each magazine must strike an enemy or any object which can be hit (Barrels, Cash Crystals, Fruit from Ye Scurvy Dogs, Etc.) for the reload to count towards an Anarchy stack. Being "In combat" is not necessary.
Preshrunk Cyberpunk
Tier – 2

Robot Rampage
Tier – 2
Levels – 1
Effect: Deathtrap Ability. Deathtrap lashes out with a flurry of attacks.

Annoyed Android
Tier – 3

Effect: Increases the movement speed of Deathtrap by 7% per level.
Discord
Tier – 3

Typecast Iconoclast
Tier – 3
Levels – 5
Effect: Whenever you get a stack of Anarchy there is a 6% chance per level you get an additional stack.
Rational Anarchist
Tier – 4
Levels – 1
Effect: If you have 0 stacks of Anarchy, then the next time you would gain an Anarchy stack you instead gain 25.
Death From Above
Tier – 4
Levels – 5
Effect: Shooting an enemy while in mid-air consumes stacks of Anarchy and causes a Digi-splosion, damaging nearby enemies.
The Nth Degree

Effect: Every Nth bullet that hits an enemy will ricochet toward another nearby enemy.
With Claws
Tier – 6
Levels – 1
Effect: Melee Override Skill. While you have a stack of Anarchy, melee to digistruct claws and swipe twice at an enemy, dealing damage based on the number of Anarchy stacks you currently have (+0.6% per stack) and restoring health. The lower your health the more health you gain. This attack consumes an Anarchy stack.

Also, for more information on skills you can and should visit this link. There you will find a skill constructor that allows players to build their own skill tree and count the number of skill points required to become an effective warrior. Planning with this constructor will help you to see the future potential of your character and bonuses he will get after spending points on this or that skill.

Thanks for posting. Gaige is an excellent choice to play, she has a robot companion that can kind of tank for you while you sit back and snipe. I had a blast playing as her.

Having recently purchased the mechromancer pack, thanks a bunch for posting this, I will take it greatly into my decision of my build, I think Im gonna go with Anarchy >:)
