Xbox One Borderlands 3 probably won't have 16-player co-op, despite Xbox One's power

While this doesn't necessarily shed any info on Borderlands 3, it hints the next one. It's an article explaining why Borderlands 3 will not have 16 player co-op which is a lot in my eyes. I don't even have that many friends. Anyways, if Borderlands 3 does release, I expect it to be on all major consoles including the PS4/Xbox One. 16 player co-op is also way too much, and defeating bosses would be a lot easier. 4 player co-op is fine, I just want better gameplay, weapons, characters, basically everything in Borderlands 2 but better.

Why did Gearbox stop at four player support for Borderlands 2? "It's mostly for performance, to keep the network bandwidth down low enough that everyone can have a rich and fast-paced experience. Because Borderlands is a very fast-paced game. So if we went further than that, frame rates and all that kind of stuff would suffer."

"We do have a little bit of a worry that if we go to eight or sixteen or something crazy, that everyone will spread out, and you'll kind of actually lose that more intimate "We're working together" kind of experience. So there's an interesting balance there that we'll need to investigate."

Speaking to the site at PAX Australia, Hellquist suggested that Gearbox had led the way in terms of co-op on current generation hardware. "I think that we were a little bit ahead of the curve, in terms of understanding what a fun and social experience co-op gaming can be," he said. "And I think we were one of the earlier ones that people really latched onto - in this console-cycle anyway."

intresting article. yes i am a boarderlands fan..

i do like the suggestion about seeing how destiny works with the background matching will work. it is a new ip and in house.. could show them potential on new ways of bring in more people to assist with missions. lets you have that one on one feel yet still have help when desired.

I'm also a big fan of the Borderland games and am really looking forward to whatever they make next, but it MUST have split-screen co-op.

Also, I hope Destiny has split-screen co-op, it is Bungie after all.

why split screen? Just co-op over xbox live with friends? or have a lan party?

Yeah, a lan part is what we do with Halo. No split screen necessary.

I'm a firm believer that split-screen gaming is the biggest feature that separates game consoles from PC's. Also, Game consoles ultimately gained a huge following because of split-screen games. Some of the most iconic games in game console history were split-screen, such as 007 Golden-eye, Halo (the whole series), Contra, Secret of Mana, etc.

I feel as if the foundation of game consoles was built on couch friendly co-op. Online gaming has actually been slowly destroying this. I always thought one of the biggest advantages game consoles have is bringing all of your friends/family together in one room to share gaming experiences together. The best and most memorable game experiences in my life involved split-screen gaming. I remember playing Ghost Recon 4 player split-screen all night (many many times) with all my friends, including their girlfriends, for example. No online only multiplayer game can (or has) match that experience.

Borderlands is a good example of how there's still a big market for split-screen games.

If game consoles were to do away with split-screen I might just build another PC just for the living-room instead.

i think having too many players would ruin the feel of this series. I'm a huge fan and thin the 4-player count is perfect regardless what gen you play it on.
