Among the many great apps the Xbox One offers during it’s launch period is Skype; Skype is a freemium voice-over-IP service and instant messaging client. The ability to use such a program allows for al new levels of communication and social interaction, but first you need to know what you’re doing. Luckily that’s what we’re here to help with.

The first step is to make sure that Skype is properly installed. To do so you must first download the app if it isn’t already on your console. The Skype app is under the Apps page, and best of all is free. Once the app is downloaded and install you need to start it up and you will be prompted to link your existing Skype account. If you do not have an existing account you will be asked to create a new one.

Please note that allowing Skype to send notifications will allow you to accept while playing a game; with the feature turned off al calls will be missed when not directly in the Skype app. To make matters easier, you will be allowed to set friends as favorites so that you do not need to tediously scroll through all your contacts to find someone.

As mentioned in our “Kinect Voice Commands” guide you can say to your Xbox , "Xbox, Skype" and then the name of the person you wish to contact to make it instantly open Skype and allow you to call them. Likewise saying "Xbox, Hang Up” or "Xbox, Answer Skype" are also recognizable commands that can be used.

I would like to point out that I have been using Skype’s group chat ability instead of the Xbox One’s party chat and it has worked flawlessly especially when compared to the new party system on the One. Another thing to note is that while Skype can be “Snapped”, it will only allow it for voice chat and not video. Currently there is not information on whether a future patch will address this. As a special promotion to Gold Subscribers, Microsoft is offering us 6 months of free services that normaly would be a paid options on Skype, you can see the picture below for details.
