Xbox 360 Keeping up with multiple characters

Do you have trouble keeping up with several characters at once with this game? I'm really not good at doing several things at once, and sometimes it confuses me to try to switch characters.

I’ve not played this myself, though I have enjoyed other Lego games - does it follow the storyline of the films? I know Lord of the Rings does stick to the story, but I wasn’t sure whether some of the others differ (?).
