Kinect vs Eye toy

Kinect is a great way to play games. Yet, if we look back, we would see that the eye toy for the playstation was the first one to introduce a controller-free gaming experience. What do you think is the difference between the Kinect and the Eye Toy?

The eyetoy doesn't really seem all that popular..
Also since the Kinect is recent it has more power and more abilities than the eyetoy.

I wonder why the Eye Toy was not that popular. Was it extremely ahead of its time? Or wasn't there any decent game that was developed for it? I don't know why Sony hasn't thoroughly developed it though. It had very great potential.
