Transferring the classic Lego gameplay into a vast overworld is also a success, but the redundancy in secret solutions in this play space hurts the experience, almost turning it into a mundane collect-a-thon. Thankfully, the classic Lego gameplay dominates the main game, making Lego Batman 2 another goofy brick-building blast to play.

The open world stuff could use some tweaks, but the little stumbles don't stop LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes from being a great game.

If Lego Batman 2 is a test run for a Lego DC Super Heroes game in the future, it’ll hopefully serve as a guide for what needs improvement (the flying controls for characters like Superman are unintuitive and touchy) and what should be avoided (it’s okay to tease, but not insult, your heroes). If so, that should be the Lego game you buy — and not rent like this one.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes transports the series' problems to an open world, but winning humor shines through the clouds.

These are relatively minor problems when stacked up against the sheer inventiveness of the levels and the fun of playing as iconic DC characters. The combination of LEGO and license has resulted in mixed results ranging from spectacular to mundane, but LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes definitely leans in the direction of the former.
