The gameplay doesn’t explore new territory, but delivers a retro charm that fans of the series should appreciate. It’s a new day for Max Payne, and at the same time, a return to his glorious past.

Max Payne 3 is a different type of proposition. The gameplay is simple yet satisfying, but it’s entirely in the service of a strongly-authored narrative.

With savage gunplay and an absorbing personal story, Max Payne 3 is an exhilarating shooter that grabs hold of you and doesn't let go.

The unique storytelling and charismatic narration will pull you into an enthralling experience, but glitchy cover mechanics, poor checkpoint management, and off-putting pacing will rattle you out of your gaming reverie more often than you’d like.

Strip away the game’s various modes and issues, though, and Max Payne 3 is, at its core, a compelling action game in its very own sub-genre. More epic than the likes of Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta and packed with more personality than most entire first-person shooters, Max Payne 3 is a unique brand of entertainment.
