Minecraft: Brewing
Brewing is another creative process in Minecraft that allows you to brew potions and make your character obtain bonus abilities. Brewing is performed by adding different ingredients to the water bottles on a Brewing Stand.

Brewing Stand Grid
In order to make a Brewing Stand, you will have to use your crafting skills and craft one on the Crafting Table. For that matter you will need 1 Blaze Rod and 3 Cobblestones.

The Process of Brewing
In Minecraft brewing process is rather simple and the only thing you need to do is to put the required ingredients into the upper slot and water bottles, Primary or Secondary potions in the others. Different potions have different influences on the character but they usually make him better, stronger and allow him to do things he’s never done before.
Every potion starts with the water bottle, so it might be a good idea to make enough bottles beforehand and fill them with water either from a Cauldron or any other suitable water source. Now, the next thing to do is to add the required ingredient and create a base potion. The base potion itself has no effect but adding another ingredient, that is the next step, will make it better and a lot more functional. The brewing principle remains the same: you take the next ingredient and add it to the water bottle (in this case – basic potion). And, if you want to make the potion even more effective, don’t be shy and add another ingredient. With the help of the third ingredient your potion can become more intense, last longer or turn the effect harmful. On the top of that you can add Gunpowder at any time and convert almost any potion into a Splash Potion that can be thrown at enemies from the distance.
Potions are extremely useful in Minecraft but, at the same time, are not easy to make especially because of the Blaze Rod and Nether Wart. However, if you have enough of those in your inventory, your future is pretty safe. But still – I would recommend to start collecting Nether Wart at the first place because it is the basic element for almost any potion.
And here’s the best part: as you can see yourself, there are 3 slots reserved for water bottles. If you do not know already, you can brew three potions at once with one ingredient only. So, if you are low on different items, just make sure that there are enough bottles in your inventory. Making three potions of any kind is always a good idea, don’t you find?

Brewing Equipment
Before you start brewing potions, it is highly recommended to get everything prepared. Of course, you can do that while brewing potions but it is a lot better to have everything optimized and organize your “Brewing” place the way it should be organized – perfect!
So, here are the basic 4 items you will need to make your brewing comfortable and possible.

1. Brewing Stand.
This is the place where everything is done. Here you will mix different ingredients and will brew some potions. Brewing Stand is the basic element of every brewing and you won’t be able to do a thing without it.
03 Brewing Stand 1.png
In order to make a Brewing Stand, you will have to use your crafting skills and craft one on the Crafting Table. For that matter you will need 1 Blaze Rod and 3 Cobblestones.

2. Cauldron
Water is the basic element for every potion and by placing a Cauldron near your working place you will make it closer to reach. Each Cauldron can hold a bucket of water which is enough for 3 glass bottles.
04 Cauldron.png
In order to make one you will need 8 Iron Ingots. Use your crafting skills and craft it on the Crafting Table.

3. Glass Bottle
This is a basic container for all kinds of potions. In order to make one you will need 3 Glass cubes. Use your crafting skills and craft it on the Crafting Table.

4. Water Bottle
Water Bottle is a starting point for any kind of potion. You can easily make one by filling it up with the water from the Cauldron mentioned above or any other suitable water source.

Ingredients

Basic Ingredients
In order to cook almost any potion, you will be forced to add some basic ingredients. The most important one is Nether Wart as far as it is required to make most of the potions. The other basic ingredients will only offer variation of the “Potion of Weakness.”

1. Nether Wart
When added, Nether Wart makes an “Awkward Potion.” Also known as Nether stalk, it is a plant that grows in the Nether. It usually can be found within Nether fortresses around staircases.
07 Nether Wart.gif

2. Glowstone Dust
When added, Glowstone Dust makes a “Thick Potion.” Glowstone Dust is obtained by mining Glowstone blocks, which are only found in the Nether or acquired through Trading.
08 Glowstone Dust.jpg

3. Redstone Dust
When added, Redstone Dust makes a “Mundane Potion (Extended)”. Redstone dust can be obtained by mining Redstone ore with an iron pickaxe or better, trading with priest villagers, or by killing witches.

4. Fermented Spider Eye
When added, Fermented Spider Eye makes a “Potion of Weakness”. Spider Eye can be crafted from a Spider Eye, brown mushroom and sugar on a crafting grid.
10 Fermented Spider Eye.png

Secondary Ingredients
Of course, a simple basic ingredient won’t make that big of a difference and that is why you will have to imbue an Awkward Potion with secondary ingredients. They will change your potion consistency but won’t change potion’s duration or intensity. When added directly to a Water Bottle, any of these ingredients will produce a Mundane Potion.

1. Magma Cream
By adding Magma Cream to the Awkward Potion, you will turn it into the Potion of Fire Resistance. Magma Cream is dropped by Magma Cubes and can also be crafted using Blaze Powder and a Slimeball.
01 Magma Cream.jpg

2. Sugar
By adding Sugar to the Awkward Potion you will turn it into the Potion of Swiftness. It also has Speed effect. You can get sugar from crafting Sugar Cane.
02 Sugar.jpg

3. Glistering Melon
By adding Glistering Melon to the Awkward Potion, you will turn it into the Potion of Healing. Glistering Melons can be crafted with 8 Gold Nuggets and a Melon Slice placed anywhere in a crafting grid.
03 Glistering Melon.png

4. Spider Eye
Spider eyes will turn awkward potions into potions of poison.
By adding Spider Eye to the Awkward potion, you will turn it into the Potion of Poison. Spider Eye is dropped by either Spiders or Cave Spiders when killed by the player. However, you won’t get it from a spider that died by itself or environmental damage. It is also dropped by Witches from time to time.
04 Spider Eye.jpg

5. Ghast Tear
By adding Ghast Tear to the Awkward potion, you will turn it into the Potion of Regeneration. Ghast Tears are items dropped by Ghasts when they are killed. Unfortunately, Ghast Tears are really hard to get mostly because Ghasts fly over lava or unreachable areas.
05 Ghast Tear.png

6. Blaze Powder
By adding Blaze Powder to the Awkward Potion, you will turn it into the Potion of Strength. Blaze Powder is an item made from a Blaze Rod obtained from a Blaze.
06 Blaze Powder.jpg

7. Fermented Spider Eye
By adding the Fermented Spider Eye ingredient you will likely change the existing potion’s effect to the opposite one. Using it at the first place is kind of useless because it will turn your potion into the potion of Weakness. Fermented Spider Eye can be crafted from a Spider Eye, brown mushroom and sugar on a Crafting table.
07 Fermented Spider Eye.jpg

8. Golden Carrot
By adding Golden Carrot to the Awkward Potion, you will turn it into the Potion of Night Vision. In order to obtain one you will have to combine one regular carrot with 8 Gold Nuggets.
08 Golden Carrot.png

Modifiers
For potion correction you can use some items that will either increase some of its abilities or will corrupt the previous effect. This is very useful when you need to make your potion unique and increase its Duration or Strength.

1. Redstone Dust
By adding Redstone Dust ingredient you will be able to increase Potion’s duration and turn it into the Potion of “Something” (Extended). Redstone Dust can be obtained by mining Redstone ore with an iron pickaxe or better, trading with priest villagers or by killing witches.
09 Redstone Dust.jpg

2. Glowstone Dust
By adding the Glowstone Dust you can make almost any kind of potion stronger. For instance, if you add it to the Potion of Strength, you are likely to get a Potion of Strength II. Glowstone Dust is obtained by mining Glowstone blocks, which are only found in the Nether or acquired through Trading.
08 Glowstone Dust.jpg

3. Fermented Spider Eye
By adding the Fermented Spider Eye ingredient you will likely change the existing potion’s effect to the opposite one. For example, when added to the Potion of Strength, will turn it into the Potion of Weakness. Fermented Spider Eye can be crafted from a Spider Eye, brown mushroom and sugar on a crafting grid.
07 Fermented Spider Eye.jpg

4. Gunpowder
When added, Gunpowder turns any kind of potion in a Splash potion. This doesn’t change Potions’ abilities but adds an amazing possibility to throw it at mobs or other players. Unfortunately, Gunpowder is not an easy to get ingredient and can be obtained by killing Creepers, Ghasts, Witches or looting dungeon chests.

Potions

Based on the unique technique, ingredients and brewing peculiarities, potions in Minecraft can be divided into two categories:
- Primary;
- Secondary (Positive and Negative);
There is also a 3rd type of potions known as Reverted. Usually, by reverting you turn better potions into weaker, less durable and less effective ones.

Primary Potions
All Primary potions are very easy to make because all you need is to add one ingredient to the Water Bottle. These are basic potions and should be used for further brewing and further potion making.

1. Awkward Potion
Ingredients: Nether Wart + Water Bottle
Color: Blue
Effect: Awkward Potion is a base potion for other potions but has no effect when used alone. Can be used to brew the following potions:
- Potion of Healing;
- Potion of Fire Resistance;
- Potion of Poison;
- Potion of Regeneration;
- Potion of Strength;
- Potion of Swiftness.

2. Mundane Potion (Extended)

SIZE=3]Secondary Potions [/SIZE]
It is not possible to brew a Secondary Potion unless you have a Primary one. In order to make a Secondary Potion you need to mix an ingredient with a primary potion. You can also combine it with the Gunpowder to turn it into a Splash Potion (potions that can be thrown at enemies).

Reverted Potions

The idea of reverted potions is usually based on a simple principle of making great things simpler. In most cases it refers to changing a longer, upgraded potion into its original weaker variant. There are two methods of creating a reverted potion:
- The first one typically involves adding Glowstone to the already upgraded potion. As a rule, a greater part of Extended potions is already modified with the Red Glowstone at the first place and it can be unmodified and reverted back to the original potion with the help of the same modifier. However, not all of the potions will react to the revert process.
- The second method involves adding Fermented Spider Eyes, usually followed by the Glowstone. In almost every case this will corrupt the potion and will turn it into a negative one but with the very same strength. After that, depending on the recipe, you will have to add a corresponding Glowstone to the extended negative potion.

Glowstone Potions
1. Potion of Fire Resistance (Reverted) = Potion of Fire Resistance (Extended) + Yellow Glowstone Dust
2. Potion of Slowness (Reverted) = Potion of Slowness (Extended) + Yellow Glowstone Dust
3. Potion of Weakness (Reverted) = Potion of Weakness Slowness (Extended) + Yellow Glowstone Dust

Redstone
4. Potion of Healing (Reverted) = Potion of Healing (Extended) + Red Glowstone Dust
5. Potion of Harming (Reverted) = Potion of Harming (Extended) + Red Glowstone Dust

Fermented Spider Eye
6. Potion of Harming (Reverted) = Potion of Harming (Extended) + Fermented Spider Eye
7. Potion of Slowness (Reverted) = Potion of Slowness (Extended) + Fermented Spider Eye
8. Potion of Weakness (Reverted) = Potion of Weakness (Extended) + Fermented Spider Eye
