So we all know that Saints Row has become rather ridiculous lately and with Gat Out Of Hell and IV, things are wilder than ever and some may see it as just plain stupid. But I was watching some old Saints Row IV trailers and a thought came across my mind. What if there is a meaning behind the madness? You play as a super powerful president who just goes around destroying the messed up America and doing whatever you really want. Perhaps the developers were trying to convey a message, with the alien invasion representing foreigners coming into America and you destroying those aliens representing how America discriminates against foreigners, mainly Muslim and Mexican immigrants.

Now I don't live in America but I do watch a lot of American media so I have a sort of idea of what is going on there. Do you think there is actually a deep meaning behind the madness of the game?

Truthfully speaking I don't think that there is a deep and meaningful reason behind the way that the games evolved, although I can maybe see what you mean.

I think the makers of Saints Row have just gone off on there own parallel little universe and while there's still a few players that have followed them, I think the majority of gamers have given up with the series, or are thinking about doing at least.

First off, it's interesting hearing you're not from the US since I tend to see that Xbox isn't very popular outside the country. Just out of curiosity, how popular is Xbox where you live? I know PlayStation is a stronger brand worldwide.

Secondly, I agree with @pwarbi. I don't think the series has a deeper meaning. I honestly preferred Saints Row for what it used to be. I'm not saying I've given up on the series but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed in where the series has gone.

Um, I wouldn't be surprised? That said, I think Saint's row is just a progression of a game idea, with a team constantly contributing to the core of what already existed to try and expand it and hit as many hands as possible. It would make perfect sense that there was a social commentary embedded in it

Playstation is a little more popular here and the Xbox is a budget alternative ( At least with the 360 vs the PS3, with the One and PS4, its about the same, R6500 ). I'd say Xbox Live is definitely less popular because its so expensive and PlayStation's offering is, well... free. Most people have very strong opinions on what is best, but the majority prefer Playstation since everyone here is quite illiterate ( The general IQ is probably that of your Kindergarten kids ) so that contributes to people's purchasing decisions more than you would think. For example they would think an Xbox is a t.v or media player, not a gaming console. ( Yes, people are very stupid in South Africa. )

With regards to what @pwarbi mentioned, I'd say the game developers have seem to go into some sort of world of their own... a very strange world anyway. I mean, who even came up with the idea of a free roaming game in hell of all places?

Just touching on the popularity of the Xbox One compared to the PlayStation 4, here in the UK the brands are both pretty popular but to me it seems that Sony have just crept ahead in the last 6 months or so.

And in regards to Saints Row...I do think the game as been done well, it's just a crazy idea for a game in the first place like I think we all agree.

That tends to be how it goes, yeah. I think playstation still has a stronger following overall than the xbox, and the way that things have been going for the one, a lot of people are going to be turned off by these server issues and make their way to the ps4 instead. I own both but hey, it's whatever sometimes

I also own both consoles, and as you do aswell, you're probably aware yourself that the PlayStation 4 servers aren't flawless by any stretch of the imagination either.

It sounds like a Saint's Row mentality actually. Let's make consoles focused on on-line play, but then use the worst servers available so people struggle to play the games. On top of that, let's charge them $50 for the privilege!

PlayStation is the strongest console brand in the world. This is probably for several reasons, such as it being around longer, it being Japanese which allows it to take off in the Japanese market (although from what I understand even Japanese consoles aren't very popular in Japan anymore) the original PlayStation getting off to such a strong start, as well as the PlayStation 2 being the best selling console of all time. The only reason the Xbox 360 was able to tie with the PS3 last generation was because it came out first, it was cheaper, it had better online capabilities and better games (at least at first). However if you look at the numbers you'll notice that the 360 was really only more popular in North America (which albeit is by far the largest market for games in the world) as well as maybe a couple other ones here and there and the PlayStation 3 was more popular in just about every other place in the world. However this generation the PlayStation 4 is more popular even in North America (which to be fair it's not a monstrous lead but it is significant) meaning it's beating it in literally every market. But my main point is that I really don't think Xbox will ever be "on top" for a generation because it just doesn't have the same worldwide appeal that PlayStation does. If it overtakes the North American market again then maybe it can tie or at least come close, but that's it; and this is coming from someone who doesn't own a PlayStation 4.

Also, sorry for completely derailing this thread... I just find this topic to be interesting.

The problem is that PS4 servers aren't perfect, but they are winning by comparison. Yeah I've had problems with PSN, but the thing is the xbox has been so much consistently worse that it's to be expected where with PSN it's still aggravating! lol :)

As a gamer that's spent a lot of my hard earned money on this industry over the years, as I'm sure yourself and a lot of others have, I just expect both Sony and Microsoft to get their acts together now and deliver the quality of service we should have been getting all along.

Surely that can't be too much to ask now can it?

Yeah, this is one of the symptoms of what I was talking about - there is a gap between consoles. These console switches could be so much better, but it's still only generation 4. A lot has been solved, but the issues caused by running 2 networks along with 2 consoles seems to be a pretty big hassle on the other end of contracts and payroll, etc.

I do think that in a way the gamers are being taken for a bit of a ride by the main manufacturers, and they aren't really doing what's best for us, but rather just what's best for them.

Even the software houses such as the ones that make Saints Row aren't listening to what we want, but rather just doing whatever suits them, hence a good series going a bit off the rails like the latest one as done.

I believe all the makers of Saints Row sit at a table in a board room with a large ice bucket full of bottles of high volume liquor. In front of the table is a life size dart board with game plot ideas on them that they thought of from the night before, which happened to be 4/20.

After about a dozen bong rips to the face and about 12 to 15 shots of the cheapest, highest volume per content liquor they can find, they throw those darts at the board full of ideas and that's how they choose their plot and make millions of dollars in the process.

Tara, that very well may be true. They cant be complete idiots though because to code a game and actually make it successful like they did does take some sort of brains, but the game itself, in the right eyes, is completely idiotic and I too pondered whether they were high when they made it. I guess we'll find out when they release the next game what things have come to, if they release another one, which I doubt since Gat out of Hell was a complete fail.

I want this job. Even if this isn't what they do, I want this job. It's the only way. I feel like this would make a way better game than SR.

It looks like there's quite a few of us then that think the same about Saints Row, and where they've taken it.

Its a shame really because although it was never going to rival GTA, I think it had a decent future...and I'll make a point again of saying...HAD!

I really liked the original Saints Row but unfortunately it has a couple of problems that make it so it doesn't hold up as well as it could have. loved Saints Row 2; it might be my favorite open world crime game of all time honestly. Saints Row: The Third was also fantastic and although I preferred most things about Saints Row 2, there were things about 3 that I appreciated. Saints Row IV was alright for what it was but it was the weakest of the main four games.

I also don't think that there was any deep and meaningful theory behind the game either. If there was then I think it at least would have had an excuse for being so...Well? Odd?
