im sure they will come around to indie titles at some point.. right now they are putting out fires other places and since the indie titles are not someting crazy im sure that adopting it to the xb1 wont be a hard publish/issue..

in reality i think the non indie gamming is a safty net for xb1 or microsoft... it allows them to get their hands on a title and make sure its crisp and up to the console standards and keeps it looking good.. i think their fear is a sub par game reflecting negative on the system. i look at indie/arcade games as the same. it may be semi anticipated but its not a big title... ive never played minecraft or stuff like that so its not a big sell to someone like me. abes odd world or what not may be an anticipation or want for some but its not a borderlands2/3 cod, battlefeild release with big sales numbers

but im open to other views on the topic.. fill me in/learn me something.

Safety net? Subpar games? Aren't there a lot of subpar games that are not indie titles? Also I think that there are a lot of talented developers out there and I think that a self publishing system would be beneficial for developers and gamers alike. A self publishing system gives developers a chance to showcase their skill while giving more choices to gamers.

their are many not great games on the market... not everything is block buster titles.. but their is even less major titles with indie games compaired to big label...

their are a ton of talented developers and titles out their but looking at it from microsoft prospective on the corperate tower...

I do think that allowing indie pubnlisher titles makes way for the potential of a good game from an independent publisher. I will not think for a second that indie equals bad. This is just not true and its ridiculous to assert Big publisher publish a good share of bad games just as some indie publishers publish good games.

im not saying that independent make bad games their are some good one.. abes odd world is one of them. what im saying is look at it from microsofts view.. they pay publishers royalties for development some big dollar figures as well. think of all the big title games they support and dump money int. cod, borderlands, halo, forza and the list can go on.. now look at an independent their sales ar not that of the big publishers and the sales arnt as high.. yes some titles get big but its a shot in the dark at which to back. if they let indie games/publishers do what they want on games and release them on a console what insentive does it give activision to develope the games microsoft wants and what leverage do they have at getting backing for development.

im all for indie games but look at it from a big franchise prospective.

I can understand that having Big publishers makes games for your console is definitely good for Microsoft money-wise. But the question is: why should I care about the profits of Microsoft? IF anything their interest in money screws me over (IE DRM). I do appreciate big box games, don't get me wrong. I just don't like game release priorities always having to end up lining the pocket of Microsoft executives.

They need to do this.

If they fix this, then it's going to do wonders for the platform. I feel like they've had this planned all along, but they just messed up the message and were to caught up in the drm stuff to worry about it until Build. Shame really. This could have been another big positive not for E3. Still better late than never.

Microsoft is really looking bad. At this point, E3 might as well not even happened. There's been so many things that they've backtracked on. While I agree they DO need to do this, they're just looking like they're leading from behind now. They seriously mishandled the announcement of Xbox One. Good news for indie developers however. I can't wait to see what content they are able to produce,

xb1 dominated e3... out of all the youtube reviews on games you hear them and developers mention xb1 99% of the time.. unless you were specifically looking at ps4 specific games and game sharing their was no chatter about it.

the title that won e3 this year is a xb1 exclusive(titan fall) all the interviews with tom clancy(multi platform) all talked about the xb1 battlefeild4 same deal... cloud this xb1 that ...

how bad is microsoft looking... it leads in pre sales leads in anticipated games, offers the xclusives, offers tv connect in my eyes you herd as much from ps4 as you did the wii u..

people are giving xb1 **** for drm and 24 hr connectivity. they back tracked on drm/connectivity... and were still leading the pre sales even with alll the crap they were catching.

what cracks me up is how people want to take kinect away, drm,tv connect... what are you left with... a ps4 lol.. u have to strip xb1 of everything to end up with its competition.

Some rep said that we'd hear a lot of "good things" tomorrow about games in a video. So there's still a possibility we may see an update on self-publishing and maybe even more.

their is always room for microsoft to move on indie game titles and such.. they could have done it 5 years ago and could change how they work tommorow.. with them pushing the surface and intigration similar to app store/android and such they will have to allow companies and small ones to publish titles mini games and such(call them arcade games for the moment)

one of the things i hate about app store games is how similar they all are.. from a shooter to a magic game is all the same general game play. i usually get about a day of play before its off my ipad2 or iphone.

I agree with that. I still laugh at the people who think tablet or phone gaming is going to replace consoles/PC any time soon. It's a nice supplement at best.

What tablets and phones do best is quick, in and out games that rely on touch. That's why you see Bejeweled clones and runner games rule the roost.

my most recent games on app store were free... the simpsons(played for 2 hours total) and the zanga game( only game on 360 ive downloaded/payed for(gods of war)$9.99

the problem i have with the app games or arcade/download games is from day1 to the last mission their is really nothing diffrent... ill go with the gods of war on my 360 for example.... all your playing towards is to unlock a few weapons.. their is no levelling up or new areas to explore or fight.. the enemys are all the same level 1 -50... they all come from the same place when ur in that room... their is no new maps or even open world explore.. i was actually shocked the graphics were decent... but at the end of the day i spent 10 dollars on a ok **** game...

you say well 10 dollars is not much.. think about what games for 10 dollars more used i could get that have a ton more play ability, story,content,graphics,leveling.. ill go further.. battlefeild3 used. under 20 dollars. new in the package battlefeild platnium with all the packs is 3x.xx dollars... their is a story line.. a play thru and multiplayer... and people will be on it for a year or more... i bet if i go on gods of war tommorow and try and match server play it will take a while to find 4 players on a server... so for 10 bux i got a at best 3 weeks of gameplay.

Well, it's good to see Microsoft is at least adapting to what the consumers are asking for. I hope this rumour is true because Indie games are great both for gamers and for the developers to be able to publish what they want so the more control and support they have in terms of creating and publishing on their terms, the better.

Now self-publishing yet, but still big news:

Unity Technologies Blog said:
So, did we mention that we’re really serious about multiplatform development? We want to provide the best engine in the world, and an important dimension to that is opening up as many avenues as possible for our developer community to find success.

Today at Microsoft’s annual Build conference, a strategic partnership was announced between Unity and Microsoft. That means support for their rather badass upcoming Xbox One and much more.

I’m also happy to say that the Windows Store Pro publishing add-on will be free when released (soon). So all current and future Unity Pro 4 customers stand to get $3000 worth of tech at half price!

You’ll be able to port your games, ads, training and educational apps―any kind of Unity-authored content―to both the Windows Store Apps and Windows Phone 8 platforms with a Unity Pro 4 license.

If that news isn’t thrilling enough, we also announced that we’re collaborating with Microsoft to develop tools for the Xbox One entertainment system, including support for many next-generation features like enhanced Kinect gestures and recognition, multiplayer matchmaking, SmartGlass and cloud stuff.

Oh, and developers who build games published by Microsoft Studios get the tools for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One free of charge.

Everywhere we look, we see original, hand-crafted, fun and immersive experiences created by you guys. That vision of democratizing game development always underlies what we do, and I’m thrilled that the collaboration with Microsoft delivers more ease and more oomph for you guys to bring your games (and other work) to yet new places and new audiences.

Onwards and upwards. Until next time (at Unite Vancouver).

David Helgason

I can't post links yet because of my post-count, but it's on the Unity Technologies blog.
