Spec Ops makes an admirable attempt to inject morality into a standard shooter experience. The narrative unravels at the end and the controls are subpar compared to the top-tier competitors, but the journey into madness is unlike anything I’ve played before.

The sum of Spec Ops’ unexpected story is an army shooter that makes killing people mean something. This, along with its thoughtful aesthetic and intelligent enemy encounters, defies the standard established by low-aiming action games. Multiplayer can’t muster up the same courage, though, and while the hollow online experience doesn’t detract from the single-player campaign’s accomplishments, its reliance on convention doesn’t do anything to elevate it.

Suspension of disbelief aside, the action is intense and Spec Ops boasts several big set-piece sequences to take your mind off the moral consequences of your actions, such as utterly destroying a glass-enclosed radio tower with a helicopter-mounted chaingun, and terminating targets while clinging to a speeding water truck.

A striking vision of a devastated Dubai plays host to murky morality and banal gunplay in Spec Ops: The Line.

Spec Ops: The Line is one of those rare games where the story nearly eclipses the gameplay. There is some powerful imagery throughout the game that will stay with you long after you've played it.
