Xbox 360 Turning The Console On Through The Controller... Or Not

I'm sure everyone here knows that you can turn the Xbox 360 console on by pressing the power button on the console OR by pressing the center button on the controller. Most of the time, we just turn it on through the controller. Lately though, we've been having issues getting it to work. We'll press the center button on the controller which will turn the controller on, but not the console. Does anyone know why this might all-of-a-sudden be malfunctioning?

I have issues with that, too, from time to time. The only reason I can come up with is that the batteries might be weak, or if you're using a rechargeable Xbox battery back, it might be time to recharge it.
