Xbox 360 Wasteland 2 Fan Funded

What is it I keep hearing about a new Wasteland 2 coming out, and the fact that the game is fan funded? Has this ever happened before? I am just trying to imagine a game even trying to get made, if it is only fan funded. There must be so hardcore and rich gamers out there, for this to even work. What do you think?

I hope Wasteland has a huge fan base and their rich. Does anyone know the amount they have raised? It makes me nervous as to how the game is going to be. A low budget game that sucks would be so disapointing!
