I bought an xbox 360 off ebay and the seller said that it had a laser problem so i bought it, when i received the xbox it read CD's but not dvds or games so i purchased a new laser, i had just got done installing the new laser and i tested it while the xbox was apart, the game played fine but after i put the xbox back together it gets This disc is unreadable every time i try to launch the game, i have tried taking it apart to figure out what the issue is but have had to success, also i should mention that it plays DVD's and CD's.

Do you have the drive sitting in there correctly? If it runs without the cover on, but not with it on. Sounds like something is not in place and squishing the drive. Causing it to not spin as fast as it needs to. Make sure the cable isn't getting tugged on either. I have never replaced just a laser before, but I have replaced the whole drive. The reason it is playing CDs/DVDs is that the disk drive doesn't need to spin as fast to read it. Most are single layer, but most games are dual layer needing more pew pews from the laser.

It did play with the cover off, but now it won't even do that, also when it did play it took a long time to read and load the game, now it still takes a long time to read the game but when i launch the game i get that error, but CD's and DVD's read and play right away.

Is everything cleaned out in there? Maybe the laser got dirty when you installed it, or when you close it up, there is something weird happening, like a reflection during reading. My buddy's Xbox reads discs when it's upright but not when it's on it's side, so it might just have to do with the way things are oriented inside. Not much else I can tell you but that's the experience I have with it.

It is really clean inside, i took it apart again after and tried cleaning the laser with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, i also tried using a laser cleaner cd, but the xbox will not play the track that cleans it.

Sorry didn't see the second page, i have 2 games and they are new, i just bought them when i got the xbox

Most likely an issue with your xbox then. I've had the issue before with the old white Xbox Arcade. Check your hard drive is connected to the system correctly. If it is, then open up your disc tray and blow gently into the tray, make sure there are no dust particles or dirt on, or underneath the tray. If all that fails, you will need to open the system up and have a look at the disc reader/sensor, as that's most likely to be the cause of the problem you're having.

I tried 2 different lasers 1 new and the xbox is very clean inside including in the dvd drive, i do not think it is the xbox since it plays demos i download

You could try getting a can of pressurised air and using that. Often when the games stops being read, dust/dirt can be the cause, especially if the lens is dirty also. I had this happen with my PS3, and cleaning it didn't work though. Is the console still under warranty? your best bet is to send it off for maintenance because it's a bad sign if it is not playing games. I actually completely broken my first PS3 by attempting to sort it myself so I recommend you either send it to Microsoft or another console specialist.

I bought it off ebay and it is a 2006 console, so i am pretty sure it is not under warranty, as for the lens being dirty i do not think that is the issue and inside the dvd drive is clean, also i reads dvd's and cd's and i know there is no issue playing games because i play demos and they play fine, it just won't play games from a disc, also it takes abnormally long to read the game discs.

That was exactly the same as my PS3. I think that it has two separate lenses though - one for CD's and DVD's and one for games. Sorry to hear you are having this same problem with the 360. I think the best bet is to look around for the cheapest maintenance guy you can find who knows how to best tackle the problem.

If it's not the xbox itself, then it's the discs you are trying, I'm assuming you've checked them to make sure there are no obvious surface scratches or marks and such? If there isn't, then it definitely points to an issue with the laser inside the console, and you will need to get it seen to if you want to play on the xbox again. :p
