Borderlands 2. Character Builds: Axton the Commando

borderlands_2_commando.jpg

Classes in Borderlands 2 differ from those offered in the first title. However, many of them share pretty much the same possibilities and skills. You will still find Lilith, Brick, Mordecai and Roland in the Borderlands 2 but only as game characters and not as playable heroes. From the very beginning you will be offered to pick 1 out of 4 classes but the additional fifth character (and class) can be purchased and downloaded via Xbox Live. Those gamers who preordered the game, will get the downloadable content for free.
Classes in Borderlands 2:
1. Salvador the Gunzerker;
2. Zer0 the Assassin;
3. Maya the Siren;
4. Axton the Commando;
5. Gaige the Mechromancer (is the first DLC available for download via Xbox Live).

Axton the Commando
Axton the commando from Borderlands 2 has a lot of in common with the Soldier from the original Borderlands title. His main ability is to drop a Sabre Turret during a fight and depending on skill specs you can turn Sabre Turret in either a tactical sidekick or pretty much individual killing machine.
Every Commando has a story to tell, otherwise he is not a commando at all. Our hero was born on Hieronymous and when he became old enough to join the forces, Axton spent 10 years with the Dahl military force. Thanks to his persistence, bravery and great physical preparation, Axton reached the rank of Sergeant. But, this story would not have been a story of a Borderlands 2 hero if not an unexpected outcome: Axton’s pursuit of personal glory and disregard for orders led to numerous compromised missions. Well, because of that and a few more things that we are not allowed to share (because it’s classified information), Axton was discharged from the military by his commanding officer and, as it turned out to be, wife Sarah. Sarah might not have been the best wife ever but she definitely was a good commander. So, Axton took her advice and flew to the border worlds, went AWOL (absent without official leave) and has been working as mercenary on other planets. Axton became aware of the Vault thanks to a radio advertisement orchestrated by Handsome Jack and challenging combat drew him to Pandora.

Investing Skill Points: Recommendation
As it was mentioned before, Axton’s action skill is Sabre Turret. It is a mounted gun featuring 360° rotation and can be upgraded with different abilities, weapons and features. It takes 42 seconds for this turret to cooldown and it lasts 20 seconds when deployed on the battlefield.

Guerrilla skills tree will help you to improve your damage and make your sabre turret extremely useful against bosses and tough, long-lasting opponents. If investing correctly, you can get lots of nice things for your skill points: mounted rockets that deal a great amount of damage, the ability to fire slag bullets or the additional 2nd gun. Of course, the way you assign your skills points is all up to you but to be more effective I would recommend to spend some of them on “Onslaught” which will increase your gun damage and movement speed when killing enemies. When maxed to the last level, you will get 30% damage boost and 60% movement speed boost. Do not forget about “Able” – it might not last long even when upgraded to the possible maximum but it will regenerate 2% of your health every single second. In other words, you will get 6% of your precious health back every time you use this skill. As for the turret, “Scorched Earth” and “Double Up” are exactly THE skills you are not allowed to miss. The first one will add Multi-Rocket Pods to your Sabre Turret (22 Rockets per Volley) and the last on will add a second gun to the Sabre Turret and both guns will fire Slag bullets.

Investing in Gunpowder skill tree will mostly improve your sabre turret’s abilities and skills. It also focuses on improving damage and reload speed of your character. With “Battlefront” skill you can increase your Damage whenever the turret is deployed. But what’s really worth spending your skill point on is “Longbow turret.” With the help of special technology and with this skill activated you can deploy your turret a lot further away. This feature can be used to distract enemies and make them occupied with something else while you flank them and hit from behind or simply attack while they are not shooting back at you. If you manage to get to the “Nuke”, you will be glad to know that this skill sets of a small Nuclear Blast when you deploy your sabre turret. A greater part of other skills focuses on making your character’s weapon produce more damage, less recoil and move faster on the battlefield. “Ranger” is definitely one of the most exciting skills because “it makes you better at just about everything.” When leveled to the possible maximum, you can get +5% to everything that includes:
- Gun damage +5%;
- Accuracy +5%;
- Critical Hit Damage +5%;
- Fire Rate +5%;
- Magazine Size +5%;
- Reload Speed +5%;
- Maximum Health +5%.

A greater part of Survival skills is oriented on giving extra protection and health to you and your sabre turret. Investing in “Phalanx Shield” and “Mag Lock” is recommended as far as the first one allows your Sabre Turret to project a shield that attempts to block enemy ranged fire but lets friendly ranged attacks pass through. As for the Mag Lock – it really does crazy things and allows you to deploy your turret on almost any surface including walls and ceilings. It might be useful in any possible situation but you can use this to place turrets on better strategy positions and also ensure your retreat by deploying the turret after you. But my personal favorite is “Gemini” skill that allows you to deploy 2 sabre turrets and in Borderlands – the more the merrier. If Axton’s health is more important for you than your turret’s possibilities, I would recommend spending some points on Grit. It gives you an opportunity to survive critical hit and ignore damage that would rather kill you. When leveled up to the possible maximum you will get only 20% chance of ignoring death which means every fifth critical hit will likely give you an opportunity to move forward and continue the game with 50% of the regenerated health.

Also, for more information on skills you can and should visit this link.

There you will find a skill constructor that allows players to build their own skill tree and count the number of skill points required to become an effective warrior. Planning with this constructor will help you to see the future potential of your character and bonuses he will get after spending points on this or that skill.
