When I had my original Xbox, I bought a "skin" for it thinking it would be a high quality cover of some kind. When I got it, it turned out to just be a sticker that you put right on the plastic. It didn't even look that cool, now that I think about it. I was kind of hoping that it would help to protect my console, but I also hopes that it would make it look more interesting. I've seen people paint their Xbox, but I always wonder whether that's a good idea since it can heat up relatively warm sometimes. But then when it's done right, it does look pretty cool.

If you know the right guy, painting is better in nearly every way.

Just have a look at some of the consoles they sell online. They look really nice and sleek. My friend does painting for the Kinect and he says the only reason he doesn't do the actual console is because it's a bit harder and takes a lot more effort.

The "skins" they sell you are terrible, I would not recommend them.

I have bought a skin for my PS3 but not for the Xbox. I think you can get some really cool ones, but I was also surprised that the quality was not as good as expected. Still though, I really like the skin I bought for the PS3 and it looks much better than a black box sitting in the room.

My friend bought a custom skin for his 360 and i used to mod PSPs, but stopped doing it years ago. Kinda of miss it, specially because of the income it gave me from doing such a thing, but oh well, things of the past.

I actually had my cousin paint on the Halo symbol to my Xbox. She's an awesome artist and it was something that she wanted to do for quite a while. Every time she came over she kept pestering me about painting my Xbox so I decided to let her give it a shot. It actually turned out pretty well, although over the years the paint has faded and looks a lot worse.

I haven't modified any of my own devices personally, but I do have a friend that did some work on both his 360 and PS3. He bought a skin for the 360 and it came out looking all right, but I have to agree with one of the posters above that paint is the way to go. The same friend gave his PS3 a custom paint job. While he isn't a professional or expert by any means, the thing came out looking fantastic. Much cooler than the skin.

Ha, I know that now. It wasn't the most terrible modification ever, but it just didn't look very interesting. At the end of the day it was just an overpriced, shiny blue sticker that I stuck on my console. The original Xbox had a bit more surface area on top that didn't block the vent, but I wouldn't do it to a 360.

I tried to make a blueprint on how I would make a custom carving or painting on my Xbox. Needless to say, it didn't go so great. I'm not even an artist myself, and I thought I could get somewhere by doing this, but unfortunately not.

I've also seen a bunch of custom-made Xbox's and they look really nice. Now, I don't care if it's only one specific color, it definitely will look better than the boring white and black combo.

No, I never tried painting or modifying the look of my Xbox. I can't even give my console the proper cleaning that it deserves! If I would plan to give the console to a certain friend or relative, probably I would go about to improve its looks before I give it away. However, I see no need to do that now as the main use of it is to play games and nothing else.

I have a friend who sprayed his xbox gold and sprayed his white controller black and it looks kind of good in a way but it's noticeable.
